The work will be paid for with local, state and federal dollars and it is in keeping with Mayor Holzkamp's commitment to the safety of Glen Cove residents, the redevelopment of the waterfront and protection of the environment. To that end, the mayor continued, "This project will address the dangerous "S" curve and other substandard features along Charles Street. An added benefit of this work will be the correction of existing traffic challenges at the intersection of Glen Cove and Morris Avenues."
The new road was designed within US and New York State Department of Transportation sound engineering practices with consultation from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other state agencies to ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety as well as the sustained viability of the environment. "The road connector project will provide safe, direct access for pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles that is critical to the transformation of the waterfront. It creates a vital link between the city's downtown business district and waterfront area," concluded Mayor Holzkamp. The storm water system in the project area will be improved utilizing best storm water quality practices. New traffic signals will be installed in the area as well.
