It was at a practice during Christmas vacation in 1999 that the North Shore track team received the sad news that one of its own, Peter Swanson, had lost his life in a tragic car accident the night before. In the days following, the team thought of ways to keep Pete's memory alive for track & field. It was decided to name the 400 meter sprint event after him at the Viking's annual Invitational Track Meet.
In May of 2000 the first running of the event came down to the final 50 meters. Pete's friend, county champion Brian Grieg, declined to compete in his own event, and set his eyes on winning the 400 in honor of Pete. Inexperienced at the open 400 meters, Brian set a meet record and won the 400 in a close race with Verity of Glen Cove.
This year's running of the Pete Swanson 400 meter race was no less exciting. Austin Huminski of Oyster Bay knew from previous years that the event was the premier competition of the track meet and that this year was his chance to take home the trophy. The race started off quick with a pack of runners from Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor and Carle Place setting a fast pace. On the final straightaway Huminski was fighting with Goldstein of Cold Spring Harbor who was matching Austin stride for stride. Austin pulled slightly ahead at the finish to win the event in 53.9.
Other outstanding performances from North Shore athletes included Chris Bauer winning the 400 meter hurdles. Chris went on to take the County Championship title and was named an All State Track Athlete. The North Shore 4 X 100 meter relay team consisting of Jeremy Vanderheyden, Johnny Chang, Zach Tayne and Anthony Bastardi took home the gold in that event. Freshman standout Jacob Tobol was this year's champion in the Frosh/Soph 400 meter run.
