Big Red baseball is here once again with Glen Cove's Boys of Spring jumping out to three consecutive wins. Opening the season against the Falcons of Locust Valley, the Big Red registered a 7 - 4 victory. Leading the way with the hitting was returning third baseman Tom O'Rourke with two hits and two runs batted in. Also Bruce Testa, Garrett Landry and Anthony Bellock chipped in with hits. Picking up the pitching victory was senior Kevin Moralas going five and one-third innings, giving up two hits and recording eight strikeouts.

Next for the Big Red, opening their league schedule, came a meeting with the Rebels of Great Neck North. The duo of Kevin Moralas and Steven Kornreich came away with a 6-3 victory. Leading the hitting was centerfielder Anthony Bellock a junior, with three hits and three runs batted in. Adding a big run-scoring single was Kurt Cornelis.

Completing a three-win week the Big Red traveled to the Golden Eagles of

Bethpage to come home with a 7-3 win over the Eagles. Leading the way in a 12-hit game were Artie Pearsall, John Maccarone, Garrett Landry and Miles Landron with two hits apiece. Picking up the win was Anthony Carrotta with a 6-inning two-hit performance, Steven Kornreich picked up the save.

With the Big Red returning 10 players from last year's county finals, seven starters, the goals are extremely high. Adding additional depth to this team are catcher Eddie Cruz, infielders Corey Land and Gabe Ermmarino, outfielder/pitcher Michael D'Urso and sophomore pitcher Taliek Vasquez. These players should give Glen Cove a big boost toward reaching its goal of returning to the county finals.

Future home games are scheduled for Thursday, April 14 vs. Bethpage and Friday, April 15 against Clark. So come on out and see the hometown boys of spring.

The Glen Cove varsity softball team made a trip upstate to play in a state softball tournament on April 9. The first round game was against the reigning state champion, Sandy Creek High School. The Big Red Team won 2-1 in 9 Innings. Highlights were Aja Alter continuing her dominating pitching against the powerhouse teams. Jamie Downer had an awesome throw from center field to nail a runner trying to score. Kelly DeAngelis contributed with her outstanding batting and base running. Then she had a diving play to stop the ball and tag out a runner trying to slide into third base. Kimmy Kessel scooped the ball and tagged a runner sliding into home. Christina Abbondandolo had the game-winning hit to drive in the winning run in the 9th inning. It was a great weekend. Outstanding effort was given by the rest of the Big Red: Rebecca Golloub, Desirae O'Neill, Vanessa Garcia, Sara Graziosi, Nina Jimenez and Bianca Pisano.
