The Vikings scored this week with offense, defense and broken records. They exploded for 25 runs and 21 hits in a conference crossover game against Great Neck South. Fourteen different players had gotten hits; leading the way were John Mulder and Steven Heimer who combined to go 6 for 8 with 5 extra base hits and 7 runs batted in. Billy Melillo threw a perfect game through four innings, ended up striking out six, and allowed three hits in five innings before the game was finally called due to darkness. The final score was 25-3.

On Tuesday the Vikings played Sewanhaka at home with Will Kunkel taking the hill. Kunkel threw six strong innings holding the Knights to three runs and five hits. The offense was sparked by Vinnie Tesiero and Bill Melillo. Tesiero, who was recently inserted in the two hole, has provided the spark the Vikings needed with his timely hitting and aggressive base running. Melillo continued his torrid start by going 3-3 with a home run, double, and four runs batted in. Billy has reached base his first 19 at bats of the season-- a new Viking record. Mike Cappozzi came on in the seventh to shut the door in the 12-3 victory.

Thursday the Cyclones returned to North Shore to replay last week's game that was called due to darkness. Tommy Lucchese took the mound in his second start of the year, hurling six innings and striking out two and walking none. Tommy also added a scorching double to left in the 5th, breaking the game open. Melillo who was finally retired, went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. The key to this game was defense. The Vikings turned two double plays to extinguish potential rallies. Justin Lee was a key figure in anchoring the stellar defensive effort by contributing four put outs. " The guys are starting to show patience at the plate which is key to our success," pointed out a pleased Coach Gatti. He was quick to add that "there is a long way to go and we must continue to work hard and improve every day."

The Vikings are finished with the conference crossover part of their schedule and now enter conference play against Mineola, Valley Stream North, Manhasset, and Seaford, playing each school in a three-game series.

The North Shore team opened the season with two losses. The Vikings lost in identical scores to Locust Valley and Garden City:1-6. However, each match was completely different. On Monday, Locust Valley was the dominant team. It was a learning experience for the players of North Shore. Each member of the team learned the importance of staying focused during the match. Highlight players of the match were John Bert, who was victorious playing an alternate and Eli Berger, who lost an intense three set battle. The team inspired by the lessons learned against Locust Valley came to play against Garden City. Although the score was the same against Garden City, 1-6, every match was close. Four out of seven matches were three set thrillers. Unfortunately, the Vikings lost all four of the individual matches. The team overall, played with intensity and consistency. It will only get better for the North Shore Vikings. Highlights against Garden City were Michael Diamond's first victory of the year at first singles and the incredible comeback of Steven Gelberg and Zack Ziskin at first doubles. Down 2-5 in the second set, they rallied back to win. Eventually they lost the third set but it was an incredible effort. This week the team plays three matches and is looking forward to getting the team's first victory.

Coach: Neal Levy

The women's track and field team improved their record to 4-2 by defeating Locust Valley and Cold Spring Harbor last Monday. The two first-place individual finishers for the Vikings were Senior Maria Wolkow in the 100m and 100 hurdles and seventh-grader Brianna Welch in the 400m and 200. The 4X100 relay, consisting of sophomores Serena Chang and Randi Zukas, freshmen Debbie Gilbert and Gabrielle DiVincenzo also earned first place honors.

Other highlights included senior Julianne Sadowski and freshman Sophia Pappas, who both ran their personal bests in their respective events. Not to be outdone was junior Amy Perazzo who launched her best throw in the discus for the season earning valuable points for the team. Overall, a good competition for everyone.
