Now that the holidays are behind us, the roundball season is starting to heat up. The Big Red basketball team is set to make another run for the playoffs. Glen Cove has been playing a very difficult non-league schedule, which hopefully has them ready for the 2005 season.
Returning from last year's 13-6 team is Destin Harvey, an All- Conference player who is averaging 15 points per game. Also returning is senior post man Stephen Arominski, senior point guard Miguel Vasquez and seniors Eric Moser and Rolando Tillman. Giving the Big Red depth off the bench are seniors John Suozzi, Victor Sanchez, John Maccarone and sophomore Taliek Vasquez. Newcomers to the team are forwards Miles Landron, Chris Ferrao, guards Steven Kornreich and freshman Roberto Lyons. Rounding out the team are junior Garrett Landry and senior Isaac Brown.
Starting the road to the playoffs was the Jan. 4 game at Bethpage, and a home game Jan. 7 against the Spartans of Valley Stream North. The next home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. when the Big Red team faces Plainedge. Future home games are: Jan. 20, 28, Feb. 1 and 9. Come out and support the Big Red team!

For the first time in a long time the Glen Cove winter track team has 45 athletes on the team. The team is lead by senior Joe Salamone who has been a great help to the coaches and to the young athletes on the team. The team is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores. The coaches are pleased to see the turn out for the team and are very impressed with the quality runners they have this year.
The Glen Cove winter track team has run in three meets so far. The team has traveled to Suffolk County Community College twice and once to the Armory in New York City. Joe Salamone, who won the MVP for the winter team last year and was also the only Glen Cove runner to win an All County award last year for the 1600 meter race, has continued right where he left off last season. Joe has already run under a five-minute mile and tied his best time ever running a 4:49 mile at the NYC Armory last week. Joe has also put in a 5:15 mile and a 5:00 flat mile so far this season. The coaches are expecting him to beat his record this weekend at the Armory where it might be his last time running there. Another long distance runner who has done a wonderful job so far this year is senior Carlos Cancel who is still looking to run under a five-minute mile. Carlos came so close, running a 5:00 minute flat last week at the Armory. Artem Siss who is new to Glen Cove but not new to running has paced himself nicely by consistently running a 5:15 mile all three times this year.
Also returning to the winter track team is Danielle Silas. Danielle, who was brought up from the eighth grade last year for winter and spring track is now a freshmen at Glen Cove High School. Danielle specializes in all hurdle events. In her first race this year, she placed second overall for conferences 2, 4 and 6. She ran an amazing time of 10.2. Danielle has run her best score ever running a 9.95 at the NYC Armory. Danielle is also a terrific 200-meter runner. She has great scores like 31 seconds and 30.1 seconds so far this year. She has competed with top notch senior athletes and she is only in the ninth grade. Mazar Thomas is another sprinter on the team who has done a great job for Glen Cove. He has run a 7.3 second 55 meter for his best. He is also placed for the long jump event. Mazar only his first year competing in this event has jumped an astonishing 18 feet 7 inches.
The Glen Cove winter track team has done such a good job. The hard workout, weekend practices, practices over the winter vacation and the "MATS" have all been tough for the team. The hard work and dedication from these athletes has made this season a success already. Christina Amaya-Canales, Megan Averm, Jose Ceron-Reyes, Kelly Cunningham, Lorelry Gomez, Marianna Graziosi, Sara Graziosi, Polina Grifortsevich, Gabriella Iannetta, Paullina Majka, Bridget Nicholas, Kaila Rivera, Rebecca Salentino, Reena Walia, German Parodis, Maura Ganado, Emily Keogler, Theresa Lucarelli, Sara De Jesus, Vinny Ienopoli, Alisha Rodriguez, Zach and Travis Stern, Joseph Mazza, Joseph Mariana, Peter Michaleas, Clare Germino, Mini Ruiz, Martina Micko are all part of the hard working and dedicated Glen Cove winter track team.
