On Nov. 27 at about 8 p.m., Glen Cove Det. Karl Van Allen arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly beating his girlfriend as well as beating her dog.

According to Det./Sgt.Thomas Fitzpatrick, at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 27, the victim argued with her live-in boyfriend when he became enraged because the victim's dog, Lucky, a shih-tzu, would not eat a piece of turkey the boyfriend tried to feed him. The victim told PO Van Allen that the defendant then began to force-feed the turkey to the dog, at which time the victim grabbed her pet to protect him. The dog then soiled the floor, and the defendant began to beat the animal with his hands and kick him down a set of stairs.

According to the police report, the defendant then assaulted the victim, pushing her to the floor and repeatedly punching her in the arm when she got back up.

Det. Fitzpatrick stated that as a result, the dog's owner sustained minor injury and the dog was unable to walk due to injuries to his front legs. The dog was removed from the house by the Glen Cove Animal League and taken for treatment at an emergency animal center in Plainview. A preliminary diagnosis was that Lucky suffered a severe neurological injury.

About a week prior to this incident, said Det. Fitzpatrick, the defendant stole his girlfriend's passport and other identification so that she could not leave the country to attend her father's funeral in the Caribbean.

The man was arrested and charged with the assault of his girlfriend, stealing her identification and animal cruelty. He was arraigned on the charges in Glen Cove Court on Nov. 28 and held on $15,000 bail.
