The Cardinals defeated the Rich Haven Mets in a come from behind victory in the semi-final game. The Cardinals were losing most of the game as the Mets took an early lead of 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Gilberto Bello walked, then stole second and with two outs, Bruce Testa hit a ball between third and shortstop. On his way to third, Bello hesitated slightly in front of the shortstop and blocked his view of the ball as it went past him into left field, scoring Bello for the first run of the game for the Cardinals. That heads-up play by Bello ignited the offense as the Cardinals scored four runs in the next inning, the bottom of the sixth, in explosive fashion. Garrett Landry reached first on a Mets error, Mark Czerniawski tripled driving in the second run and Fred Benyo's single knotted the game at three. Kurt Cornelis came up to the plate with two outs and Benyo on first. He took a rip at the first pitch, a low fastball for strike one. The next pitch was an outside curveball for ball one and with the count at one and one, Cornelis hit the next pitch high and far over the left fielder. As the ball traveled north out of Cubetta Stadium in Stanford, Connecticut, the Cardinals took a 5-3 lead. Tim Barnett was relieved by Mark Czerniawski, who shut down the Mets for the next two innings and the Cardinals advanced to the championship game to face the Stamford Babe Ruth All-Stars.
In the championship game, the Cardinals defeated the Stamford Babe Ruth All-Stars, 6-3 behind Mark Czerniawski who pitched effectively striking out 15 and giving up three hits for the win. The offense of Bello, Testa, Czerniawski and Landry with six RBIs among them and solidified the scoring.
The Cardinals' combined record for 2004 was 50 - 8. Manager Bruce Testa states, "This was a very successful season and at times a difficult one. It was our first year dealing with some of the work issues with our older players, but as I explained to my players, that's just part of growing up and our priorities changing. On the positive side, the team was able to bring up some young talent. I would like to thank all my players for their efforts this past season and also my coaches, Jerry Cornelis and John Maccarone, my team administrator Linda Martone, all the parents and Glen Cove Jr. Baseball and Softball for their continued support over the years. A special thanks and good luck in the future to Kevin McGuire and Louie Mele who have completed their cardinal tenure as players. It was great, guys. Happy holidays to all."
