Spirit week at North Shore High School started on Tuesday with "Twin Day." Students could dress like a teacher or a friend. Wednesday was "Wild and Wacky Day." On this day, students were permitted to wear their most "unusual" outfits. "Class Color Day" was on Thursday and on Friday afternoon, the entire high school participated in the traditional Homecoming Pep Rally held in the gym.
At the rally, the fall athletes were introduced. The captains and the seniors were recognized...then the fun began. A game of beach volleyball pitted the seniors against the faculty-the seniors won. Then came the "pass the hoola hoop" game. The students won that one also.
The freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior banners were presented. All were quite original and were later displayed at the Homecoming Football Game on Saturday.
The presentation of the King's and Queen's Court was next. The King's Court included King Will Kunkel and Princes Mike Luciano, Michael Gerbush, Jeremy Van Der Heiden, and P.J. Como. Jenna Holke was named Queen and her Princesses were Rebecca Briefel, Emily Gonthier, Adrienne Koslow, and Taylor Bodo.
The culmination of Spirit Week was the Homecoming Football Game against Clarke. The night started out great -- a little chill in the air, but not bad at all. The stands were packed with spectators. After the senior parents of the football players and cheerleaders were presented on the field, the Vikings took their positions and the game began. There was excitement in the air. North Shore scored the first goal. Clarke came back to tie the game 7-7. Then the lightening and rain came. It was decided that the game would continue on Monday afternoon.
When the game resumed on Monday, Clarke scored another goal to break the tie, bringing the final score to Clarke14, North Shore: 7.
All in all, it was a great spirit week and Homecoming...the tradition continues!
The boys cross-country team opened its season at Bethpage State Park on September 30 with the Vikings defeating Valley Stream North. Chris Bauer led the team with a 14:51 4K. Fellow senior Mike Gerbush followed close behind. The rest of the varsity scorers were Chris Krieb, Max Azzarello, and Anthony Bastardi. The course was wet and slow, but Chris Bauer managed to run one of the fastest times posted for the division.
One week later, the team was back at Bethpage where it lost to Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor, but managed to outrun Locust Valley. Mike Gerbush shaved 30 seconds off his previous best 4K and Chris Bauer once again led the team with his best 4K time this season. Freshman Willie Schaffer ran an amazing time posting the third fastest time for a freshman in the division. Andrew Hunter improved his time by over 20 seconds. Andrew helped place the JV squad consisting of Zack Ziskin, Matt Galatti, and Louis Russo in a competitive position in the conference.
Lady Vikings volleyball is now 9-4 in the league, and in third place. The team just beat Seaford three games to none to make up for an opening season loss to that team. Team leaders are Cori Gasser with 153 kills, 32 blocks, and 93 service points; Lauren Ko with 147 kills, 27 blocks, 124 service points; Melanie Guardino with 272 assists and 126 service points; Suzanne Long with 79 kills and 103 service points. Others contributing are Kathleen Mulvey with 98 service points, Emily Gonthier with great defense and 41 points and Catina Sementini with 48 points. The team has three games left before the playoffs begin in two weeks.
The Vikings took the field this week against non-league opponent Glen Cove and league opponent West Hempstead. On Tuesday, October 12, the Vikings faced Glen Cove which proved a strong team effort in gaining a 2-2 draw in a game in which every player participated. After Glen Cove took an early one goal lead, the Vikings came back to score two goals from Michael Frey and Chris Henry to go into halftime with a 2-1 lead. Glen Cove tied the score at two midway through the second half. Vikings' Chris Reich had the team's best scoring chance to tie in the second half as his shot beat the keeper, but not the post, and the team settled for a hard-earned draw.
On October 14, the Vikings league season continued with a return match against West Hempstead. The Vikings went into halftime down 1-0, but it was not for a lack of effort or scoring chances. Midway through the second half, Michael Frey scored off an assist from Ian Grabill as he went one on one with the West Hempstead keeper. Frey's initial shot was saved by the keeper, but Mike was able to follow up on his own rebound to tie the score. With under five minutes remaining off an assist from Eric Gomes, Michael Frey scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to give the Vikings their fifth win of the season. Viking's keeper Zach Travis made ten saves in the come-from-behind character-building team effort.
For Homecoming, the Viking seniors and juniors played the Viking sophomores and freshmen in an intra-squad game that saw the underclassmen win by the score of 3-2. This was a fun game for both the players to participate in, and for the parents to watch.
The Viking's league season continues against Clarke on October 21 and Roosevelt on October 22 at home. All games begin at 4:30 p.m. and the team hopes that you all can attend.
The North Shore Vikings had a wet and wonderful week of field hockey last week. The team continued their six game winning streak on Monday against Great Neck North. After a slow start, Catie Destio fired three goals into the cage in the first half. Maeve McGilloway scored her second goal of the season and the final goal of the game was scored by Kristen Alberga, giving the Vikings a 6-0 victory. Great defense by Sara Longobucco, Kyra Emmerich, Blair Clancy, and Kelly Henry. The team continued their winning streak on Wednesday and Friday against Locust Valley and New Hyde Park respectively. Kaela McGilloway and Catie Destio each scored two goals and the final goal of the game was by Adrienne Koslow. Great job on offense by Carrie Deutsch and Kristen Alberga.
Friday, the team faced the wind and rain and New Hyde Park. The team was very excited about playing last year's county championship team and gave themselves a lead after a quick goal by NHP. The team led 2-1 at the half and the rain did not stop the team or the fun. Amazing game by the Longobucco sisters, Amanda and Sara (both with key defense plays.) Captains Adrienne Koslow and Ashley Lopez led the team and worked hard to keep the ball out of New Hyde Park's possession. An amazing game, and there is still more. Goals were scored by Lopez and Destio.
The fourth and final game of the week was the Homecoming match against Clarke High School. Again in the rain, the fun never stopped with the mud spots and the scoring. Destio gave the Vikings a 2-0 at the half and Tyler Murphy had her first goal of the season making it a 3-0 victory. Great job by everyone. Big, big plays by all. The team had an amazing week and continues their ten game winning steak bringing their record to 10-2.
The Varsity Tennis had three matches this past week. The Lady Vikings fell to Wheatley 2-5, Great Neck North 0-7 and Manhasset 2-5.
On Tuesday, the girls gave one of their best team efforts of the season. Led by victories from Amanda Magli and Leslie George, the team lost 2-5 to Wheatley. Nikki Moshell and Diana Capasso lost a three set thriller, 5-7 in the final set. Earlier in the season, Nikki and Diana lost to the same doubles team 6-1, 6-2. This is a perfect example of how the team hasn't given up and plays to the very end. Thursday, the Lady Vikings lost to conference leader Great Neck North 0-7. GNN was too powerful for the girls. On Friday, Manhasset came to North Shore. Every match was a tightly contested battle. The team lost 2-5. Amanda Magli and Meg McCormack were victorious at first and second singles with their steady play. Leslie George lost at third singles in two close sets. Lauren Ross and Leigh Ann Carter lost 6-3 in the third set at third doubles to highlight doubles actions.
Although the team lost three matches this past week, there have been many small victories for this group of girls. Each set score is closer as well as the team match scores. The team should be commended for their effort.
The girls cross-country program traveled to Bethpage Park for the inter-conference competition. The girls improved their record to 4-2 by
Defeating Wheatley and Roosevelt. Top performances were by seniors and Captains Julianne Sadowski and Joy Brigis, who helped lead the team to victory. Other fine performances were by Sophomore Megan Butler and Caitlin Goetz, and Freshman Kerry Meditz and Jaclyn Fullam, who all moved up in distance to run their first 5k race of the season. The next competition will be the conference championships on Saturday, October 30 at Bethpage Park at 10:15 a.m.
North Shore Girls Soccer was coming off a great week with wins against Friends Academy, Carey High School and Oyster Bay. Long Beach came to North Shore on October 13 trying to break the Vikings' winning streak and succeeded, winning 4-2.
North Shore played great in the first half with both Christina DeSousa and Allyson Gordon scoring one goal and one assist each. In the second half, NS made some errors and scored two goals on themselves. On the whole, North Shore played very well as a team. Meghan Schenkel had 10 saves. The team has to score more goals and capitalize on their opportunities. Joanna Sciarrino, on defense, played well along with Lauren Portnoy, Kerry Koczen and Lauren Silka. Midfield and forwards, Christina DeSousa, Kaitlyn Silka, Allyson Gordon, Angela Shih, Jenna Holke and Lauren Beyer all played well. The team's passing skills are improving. The players find each other and move the ball down the field. North Shore girls should be proud of themselves. They will bounce back. Keep up the good work!
On Friday, the team played Malverne (away). North Shore lost 2-1 the first time they played Malverne and in this game, Malverne scored first and we came back quickly. Kaitlyn Silka scored. The score was 1-1 in the second half. Malverne scored two goals quickly and NS was down 3-1. A good pep talk by Coach Schultz energized his team and Allyson Gordon scored with an assist by Christina DeSousa. Then Allyson scored again to make it 3-3. The team's motto "Together Everyone Achieves More" (TEAM) was acheived. Meghan Schenkel was outstanding, notwithstanding the muddy conditions and the slippery ball. She had six saves-way to go, Meghan! Congratulations North Shore girl's varsity soccer!
At North Shore's Homecoming game, the team played Oyster Bay (division leaders, with a record of 7-2-1) We had previously had a shut out game in the first meeting 2-0. The atmosphere was tense. North Shore needed to win this game. As the game started, North Shore attacked very quickly. Allyson Gordon combined with Lauren Beyer, who scored with a beautiful shot. Quickly Oyster Bay scored to equalize the game 1-1. Seniors Christina DeSousa and Jenna Holke were playing their hearts out as this was their last Homecoming game. Allyson Gordon was controlling the game with her superb dribbling and deft passes. The defense of Casey Leigh, Lauren Portnoy, Joanna Sciarrino, Danielle Wong, Angela Shih, Kerry Koczen and Lauren Silka were shutting down in the attack by Oyster Bay. Well done defense! Allyson Gordon then scored three times, to earn her first hat trick as a North Shore player and making the score 4-1. Meghan Schenkel had a very good game with 14 saves. Congratulations.
North Shore girls soccer! It was a great Homecoming game. The team record is 5 wins, 4 losses, 2 draws. On Thursday, the team plays Sewanhaka and on Saturday, Friend's Academy
