The Glen Cove girl's volleyball team started off their week with a tough loss on Tuesday, Sept 28. New Hyde Park, their newest rival, gave the girls their first loss of the season. The girls had been warned about the tough competition that they would face and they won their first game in their best of five series and dropped the next three in a row.
The girls started out with their usual dose of hustle and even more heart and dedication. Captain Jamie Downer played great from start to finish, with five blocks, stopping one of the league's biggest hitters. Although the girls played a great game, they began to lose their momentum when the referee blew the whistle in New Hype Park's favor, late in the last game. As the girls tried to come back, New Hyde Park wasn't going to let that happen; they played even harder, leading them to a well deserved victory.
On Thursday the team had a tough game vs. Elmont. Glen Cove came out strong winning the first two games. Elmont then came back and won the next two games sending the match into a fifth and final game. Glen Cove pulled together as a team and squeaked out a close game. Jamie Downer had another terrific game leading Glen Cove with her career high of 30 kills and 22 service points. Sandra Mejia also had a great game with many assists and 18 service points. Anna Sebastiano had some great defensive plays near the end of the game, keeping Glen Cove in the lead. Carolena Brasiello played very well, assisting in Glen Cove's fourth win of the season.
Saturday morning the girl's team got ready to play their third game of the week. Their record of one loss and one win helped motivate them and the girls came out fired up, winning the first two games. Freshman Carolena Brasiello was playing the best volleyball she had ever played this season. Tesheryl Wheeler and Sandra Mejia also played very well! Glen Cove's girls looked unstoppable. It was in the third game that Carey fought back to win the next three games, giving Glen Cove their second loss of the season. Once again, Captain Downer had an amazing game, which included her play on the court and attitude off the court, making her one of the best all-around volleyball players in her conference. The girls' record now goes to 4-2 for the season. The team has one thing on their mind for the remainder of the season and that's to win and win big
At midseason, the Glen Cove girls varsity soccer team is tied for second place with Roslyn, both teams currently 4-1-1. One game separates the teams from a first-place tie with Mineola, who is 5-0-1. Leading the team in scoring is freshman Anna Palacios with seven goals. Along with solid defensive play anchored by senior Vicky Hackett and juniors Sam Feigman and Sara DeJesus, the team has looked solid in front of goalkeeper Rebecca Golloub. The excitement is back at Glen Cove and the girls have an opportunity to do what hasn't been done in a while - make the playoffs. Coach Peter Falen stated, "You never know when the opportunity will arise again and the girls should sense that and take full advantage of it.
