Runners of all ages and abilities will come together in the third annual Run for Heroes at the Glenwood Landing Firehouse on Saturday, September 11. The event honors the life and memory of Battalion Chief John Paolillo, a Glen Head resident and avid runner lost in the World Trade Center collapse. Run for Heroes has no registration fee, leaving the amount of donation to the generosity of the participants. Proceeds support a memorial scholarship at North Shore High School that has awarded $7,500 over the past two years.

Heroes Hill, a one and one-quarter mile run, and John's Ladder, a 5- kilometer run, cover the same first mile. The shorter run, with a 9 a.m. start, then proceeds up a steep incline to the finish. The 5k, starting at 9:15, features a half-mile ascent, the climb up John's Ladder, followed by a downhill mile to the finish.

Electronic timing and water stops during the run, raffles and refreshments after, and T-shirts to all will be included

The Town of Oyster Bay has proclaimed the second Saturday in September as Battalion Chief John Paolillo Day.
