Glen Cove Detectives Commended by Nassau Police Second Squad
The Glen Cove Police Department was honored to welcome the commander and executive officer of the Nassau County Police department Second Squad Detectives to their station on Aug. 10. The detectives came to Glen Cove Police Headquarters to present a plaque and citation to Chief Timothy Edwards and Detective Sergeant Thomas Fitzpatrick in recognition of their achievements during recent joint investigations and in appreciation of the outstanding working relationship between Second Squad Detectives and the Glen Cove Police Detective Division.

Glen Cove Is Top Choice for Commercial Spots
The lights, cameras and action were staged at three locations in the City of Glen Cove last month. After scouting multiple communities, three different production companies chose Glen Cove as the prime setting for the filming of television commercials. Viewers will see vignettes featuring the Glen Cove Senior Center (and senior citizens), the Glen Cove train station, Henry's Luncheonette, the intersection of Glen and School Streets downtown, a Landing neighborhood street, and Pryibil Beach. The commercials promote ABC Nightly News with Peter Jennings, NBC Evening News (currently being aired around-the-clock during the Olympics coverage) and Verizon Wireless. If you look closely at the ABC News and Verizon spots, you will catch a glimpse of our children and neighbors who finally got their big break!

GCHS Announces Fall Sports Starting Dates
Glen Cove High School fall sports will officially begin soon and students who signed up to play football, soccer, cross-country, girls tennis and girls volleyball should have received a letter over the summer. Football practice will begin on Monday, Aug. 23 for all JV and varsity players at the high school at 8 a.m. Football players should report to the high school on Thursday, Aug. 19 for locker and equipment assignments per letter received.

Darryl Strawberry Fields Questions at Mets Academy
Baseball great Darryl Strawberry is familiar with the vagaries of life and of life's hard lesson that wrong decisions cause painful consequences. This was the focus of the speech he gave at the New York Mets Baseball Academy in Glen Cove on Wednesday, August 11. The academy is a baseball camp for 7-15-year-old children, run by director Tom Hopke.
