The Glen Cove girls varsity track and field team competed in an exciting track meet on Monday, March 29 against West Hempstead, Plainedge, and Roslyn and Big Red athletes did their school proud.

Freshman Karina Kononenko had a record-breaking run in the 1500- meter race. Karina ran the race in 5:45, breaking a 24-year-old record set in

1980 by Barbara Bunt. Congratulations to this young distance runner!

The high scorer for Glen Cove was eighth grader Danielle Silas. Danielle finished first in the 400 intermediate hurdles, the 200-meter dash, and also placed second in the long jump. Hoping to repeat and improve on her performance at the county meet last year, Danielle is on her way. Ninth grader Laura Brady finished first in the high jump, clearing 4' 4". Junior Grace Stanisic finished first in the discus throw with a throw of 65 feet.

Girls track and field is a varsity-only sport and it should be noted that it is quite an accomplishment for younger athletes who score well against juniors and seniors from other schools. The team is wished good luck and continued success for the remaining season.
