The Glen Cove High School varsity air rifle team had another spectacular season this year. The team won its first seven matches before losing its last match to Valley Stream. The team members outscored their opponents by 220 points over the season. Despite their loss, the team went to the County Championships barely one week after and had to compete against Sewanhaka, Massapequa and Valley Stream. The outcome was quite different this time. The entire team shot outstandingly, outshooting their opponents to become Nassau County Champions for the second time in the past three years.
Gonzalo Perez shot a personal best that day with a score of 190 out of a possible 200. Gonzalo's 190 was the highest score shot by any of the competitors that day. Not far behind were Greg Babiarz with 181, Eric HIll with 179, Olin Fender with 175, Abdul Mayan with 174, Elizardo Montes with 173 and Johan Ortega with 167.
Elizardo and Greg were selected as All County shooters because their league averages were in the top 12 for all the teams in the county. This is the second straight season that these two athletes have accomplished this feat. Olin, Eric and Abdul were selected All League because their averages were the next sixth highest in their league that unfortunately did not make All County.
The team will be traveling to the very prestigious West Point to participate in the State Championship on March 5 and 6. Coach Bullis would like to wish the team much success since they have worked very hard for it in the past years. Good luck at the States!
