It was a heartbreaking loss as North Shore bowed to Carle Place in the final game at home last Monday. With the score tied at 39 and 22 seconds remaining, Amanda Longobucco sank a free throw to give the Vikings a one-point lead. League MVP candidate Jenna McGloughlin, however, nailed a jumper with 15 seconds to go despite the defensive effort by Cori Gasser, then added a free throw to put the Frogs ahead, 42-40. In the final seconds, Longobucco's try for the tie rimmed out. She finished the game with 19 points, while McGloughlin tallied 24.
In a game in which the score was tied at half-time and neither team led by more than a basket in the second half, the North Shore girls gave an effort to be proud of. Sophomores Meghan Schenkel and Christine Andrews were outstanding, along with juniors Megan McCormack, Gasser and Longobucco. JV call-up Catie DeStio came off the bench to play a great floor game, assisting Gasser in coping with the pressure defense of the Frogs.
In summing up this season, the Lady Vikings (7-11) were a very good team in an extremely competitive conference and Coach Bob Vachris said, "I am proud of each member of the squad. Juniors Catina Sementini and Kristina Alonge and sophomores Sara Longobucco and Alyssa Marrone were contributors all season long and, with their teammates mentioned above, will make up the nucleus of next year's team. Sprinkle in a few of this season's (14-1) JV players, and the future is bright. Co-captains Lexi Pisciotto and Katie Cottell will graduate this June. I would like to thank them for their cooperation, hard work and hard play for the past three seasons. They will be missed."
The Vikings soared into the Nassau Class B finals on Saturday by beating Locust Valley in a rousing 59-50 matchup at C.W. Post.
Junior Billy Melillo's 21 points carried No. 3 seed North Shore to the semifinal win, in spite of Derrick Fish's 22 points and strong effort for 2nd seeded Locust Valley. Melillo also had 24 rebounds to lead North Shore. Sophomore Will Tully had 14 points and junior P.J. Como scored 13 for the Vikings. Also on the scoreboard were Chris Galano, Brian Occhiuto and Mike Frey.
North Shore now faces the undefeated Malverne (19-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. at SUNY-Old Westbury, so call the high school athletic department for any scheduling changes and come out and support the Vikings.
