For the past 10 years winter track has competed in Farmingdale College and the Armory in New York City. Last year was a difficult year for the team, as well as the coaches, because Farmingdale College was closed to Section VIII and Glen Cove High School teams. Unlike last year, this year the track team has already surpassed last year in the total number of meets entered and the season is not even close to being over. For example, so far this year the team has had five invitationals.

With the opportunity to participate in so many meets this current season, the team has demonstrated great improvement and dedication to the sport. The athletes on the team work harder and harder every day to improve their skills in their competitive events. There are many freshman and other new faces added to the team this year, whom our wonderful juniors and seniors have taken under their wings.

Our senior and team leaders are Joe Salamone and Giovanna Condello. The first couple of meets, Joe has run impressive times in the mile runs. For the first time in his career, he ran a sub five-minute mile, (4:59) in the Armory on Dec. 20 at the Bishop games. Since then, Joe ran a 5:04 mile at the Section VIII meet on Dec. 30, a 5:06 mile at the Section VIII Relays and 5:10 mile at the Wheatley Invitational earlier in the season. Mr. Salamone has been working really hard and hopes to run under five-minute miles on a regular basis. Giovanna Condello has been one of our big leaders for the young girls who have joined the track program. Giovanna has really pushed herself this year running events like the 55meter, 300meter, and the 400 meter races. She ran between 8.45-8.98 seconds for the 55 meter dash and helped the team win fourth place medals at the Wheatley games running a 85 sec 400 meter race and participated in a 300 meter race running a 51.5 second score.

Some of the other wonderful seniors and juniors are Carlos Cancel, Joe Mazza, Angelina Dattolo, Jennifer Lamere, Jesse Liang, Hung-I Liao, Emily Keogler, Maura Granado, Allen Shin and Lana Milac.

One of the great things about this year's season is the large turnout of freshmen and sophomores who came out for the team. They have all contributed to the team with their special talents and have all become a great asset to our team. For the coaches, it is exciting being around a team that is eager and willing to learn new and exciting sport techniques. These under classmen have dedicated themselves to track and their improvements show each day. Some of the freshmen and sophomores who have joined the team are Clare Germino, Jose Harmaza, Robert Janosick, Paulina Majka, Ryan McCauley, Martina Micko, Elizabeth Ortega, Mimi Ruiz, Rebecca Salentino, Nicole Shearer, Janice An, Amelia Leung, Jasmine Melendez, Megan Avram and Artie Larocca.

This season has already been rewarding for both the athletes and coaches. All of our players and coaches contribute to the team in so many different ways and that has been the secret to our success this season. The coaches are very happy with how things have progressed this year. Good luck the rest of the season.
