Gardner "Chubby" Oakes, 84, died at his home on Dec. 15. He was born in North Providence, RI, on March 30, 1919, the son of Fred B. and Inez P. (Burlingame) Oakes. He graduated from Bryant College in Providence with a BA degree in accounting and finance. He served in the US Army during WWII. On Nov. 9, 1946, he married Maude Shaddock in Providence. For many years he was a banker and purchasing agent for the 1st National Bank of Glen Head in Glen Cove. The couple had moved to Potsdam in 1984.
He was a member of the NYS Bankers Association, a member of the CSEA, the Bryant and Stratton College Alumni Association, the NRA and Colby College Cappa Delta Rho Fraternity.
Two daughters, Anna Gail Oakes of Hermon, Anita Gwynne Oakes of Owls Head, NY, a son and daughter-in-law, Arnold Gary Oakes (Maryann) of Bombay, NY, survive Mr. Oakes. There are five grandchildren, Daniel Smith of Hermon, Austin Smith of Bruce, FL, Gary M., Jessica and Gregory Oakes, all of Bombay.
Arrangements were made by the Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, NY. His body has been donated to science.
