  • News: Mayor Holzkamp Announces Historic Superfund Settlement

At a special city council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 30, the Glen Cove City Council unanimously resolved to authorize the mayor to enter into a settlement agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency with regard to the Li Tungsten Superfund site. A buzz was in the air and smiles were on faces of the attendees, including Stephen B. Latham, partner in the law firm of Twomey, Latham, Shea & Kelly, LLP. Mr Latham has been working for years as special council for Glen Cove representing the city in its negotiations with the EPA and the Justice Department to finalize the Li Tungsten cleanup. "This has been four years in the making," he said. "In 1999 the city received notification from the EPA that because of prior ownership of the property, under the Superfund law, it would be responsible for part of the cost of the cleanup. The process we started then has now come to fruition." FULL STORY

"The good news is that most, about 95 percent, of the students in the Glen Cove school system are good students that do not get into trouble at school, don't belong to gangs, say that their parents set rules often and attend church or synagogue." That's how Cynthia Knowles began her presentation of the results of the PRIDE survey, a survey designated by Congress as a measurement of illicit drug use by youth, recently distributed to students, staff, faculty and parents in the Glen Cove District. The rest of the presentation focused more on the other five percent. The PRIDE survey was filled out and returned in the following numbers: Students Grades 5 had 6, 417 responses; Grades 7 and 8, 452 responses, Grades 9-12, 655 responses; total parents, 171 responses and school personnel, 173 responses. He was followed closely by Justin Musaffi and Jeff Liu, who placed 10th and 12th respectively.
