Brunhilda Gonzalez, a former Glen Cove school crossing guard and member of the Glen Cove Special Police, died on Aug. 12 at her home in Mountain View, HI.

Ms. Gonzalez, the mother of former City Councilman Steve Gonzalez and former US Marine Corps Sergeant Richard Gonzalez, was a visible fixture in Glen Cove in every job she worked. When she first moved to Glen Cove in 1956, she began working as a nurse's aide in the maternity ward at Glen Cove Community Hospital. Her son Steve remarked, "The chances are that if you were born between 1956 and 1969 at Community Hospital, my mom cared for you."

In the fall of 1969 she began her career as a school crossing guard at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Woolsey Avenue. When she later worked at Woolsey and Dosoris, she was known as "the lady with the red moped," as that was her mode of transportation to and from work. Ms. Gonzalez was known to remark that her greatest satisfaction on her job came from keeping children safe and making wonderful new friends.

Ms. Gonzalez was a member of the Glen Cove Special Police during the 1970s and won a number of contests for her expert practice shooting at the Glen Cove Pistol Range.

Although she had resided in Hawaii for the past 12 years, Ms. Gonzalez made a point to take annual vacations to Glen Cove to visit relatives and old friends.
