Two-time Medal of Honor winner Sgt. Major Dan Daly.
|
A large contingent of US Marines from the New York metropolitan area will pay tribute to Glen Cove native son Dan Daly with a parade and ceremony on August 10, in the city of his birth, rain or shine. Special honored guest at the parade will be Gunnery Sgt Ernest McMillan, USMC retired, who is the third most decorated Marine in the history of the Marine Corps.
Sergeant Major Daniel ("Dan") Daly was a US Marine who earned two Medals of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre from France. At the Battle for Belleau Wood in France during World War I, Daly coined the now famous Marine rally cry, "Come on you sons of bitches...do you want to live forever!" Daly retired from the Marine Corps in 1929 and died in 1937.
The Dan Daly Parade route will follow the reverse path of the Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade. Marchers will begin from the Glen Cove Firehouse, to Pratt Boulevard to Pulaski Street, to Glen Street, to School Street and end at Monument Park. A brief ceremony and concert by the US Marine Corps Bay from the Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia will take place at Monument Park. Local groups interested in joining the parade lineup should call Mayor Holzkamp's office at 676-3505.
Participating in the parade thus far are: George Lang, Medal of Honor recipient; Rear Admiral Joseph D. Steward, US Merchant Marines; the US Marine Corps Band from Quantico, Virginia; Marine Corps League Detachments from Huntington, Port Washington, Westchester, Staten Island, Massapequa and Western Long Island; USMC First District; US Merchant Marine Academy Cadets; Sea Cadets; AmVets; New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation; Bronx Young Marines; Leatherneck Motorcycle Club; American Legion members from Amityville, Levittown, Massapequa and Wantagh; Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department; VFW Post 347, Ancient Order of Hibernians; Glen Cove Harbor Patrol; USMC Recruiting Station, NYC.
