Herbert W. Surface, 74, Broadway singer, actor, community leader, of Glen Cove, died at his home in Glen Cove on June 26, 2003 from a heart attack. He was an active member in the community for well over 30 years. His commitment to the youth and arts of Glen Cove will long be remembered by the many lives he touched.

Herb was born in Roanoke, VA, and due to the Great Depression, at the age of two, his family packed all of their belongings and each other into a Model T. Ford and moved west. His family eventually settled in San Antonio, TX. Herb lived a rich childhood in Texas and while in high school was a real life cowboy working on horseback for a local ranch. He earned varsity letters in both football and basketball at Harlindale High School in San Antonio. High school was also the time Herb fully realized his passion for acting and singing.

Herb was very active in the Glee Club and all of the school's stage productions. He also represented Harlindale High as their singing cowboy. After high school Herb served his country in the Navy Reserves and attended Trinity University, as a music major, in San Antonio. He left college in the early fifties to pursue his dream of being a professional actor and singer. He moved to Dallas and appeared in various productions for Summer Stock and the Dallas State Fair. He eventually helped co-found the Dallas Music Theater.

Herb performed on Broadway for over 10 years and appeared in various shows including I Had a Ball with Buddy Hackett, Plain and Fancy and the long running My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. It was during the production of My Fair Lady where Herb met his wife, of 40 years, Charmian. Charmian, originally from Leeds, England, was a dancer and performer in My Fair Lady. To his credit Herb Surface has performed with many noted celebrities including Debbie Reynolds, Ben Vereen, Dustin Hoffman and of course the afore mentioned Rex Harrison. He has also made several television appearances including the Ed Sullivan Show and appearsedon various recordings including the soundtrack for My Fair Lady.

Herb and Charmian moved to Glen Cove in 1963 to escape the bustle of NYC and raise a family. They raised two boys, Carl of Bayville, and Jason of Fort Collins, CO. Herb and Charmian continued to work professionally in theater. Herb appeared in various productions for the Wedgewood Dinner Theater in Glen Cove including Take Me Along, starring Ray Milland, and the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. Herb and Charmian also became very involved in the community theater scene of LI. Herb directed and acted in many musicals for the Baldwin Players and Theater II of Glen Cove including Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Carousel, just to name a few.

Herb continued his passion for the arts by being very involved in Chamian's business the Dance Studio, which helped dancers of all ages pursue their dreams of dancing. The Dance Studio progressed into Charmian's Center and served the community for 22 years. Herb was well known for his tireless efforts as the lighting director and prop designer of Charmian's annual dance recitals. The recitals grew out of the small studio on Glen Cove Avenue to the auditorium of Glen Cove and North Shore High Schools. Herb also served on the board of the local dance company Dance Rouge.

In addition to the arts Herb is well remembered for his commitment to the youth of Glen Cove. He served as scoutmaster for Troop 184 from 1978 -1981. He was also very involved with the Glen Cove Jr. Soccer League. He coached both intramural and competitive traveling teams for over 15 years and served on the league's board of directors for 13 years. He was a licensed referee and coach and continued to be active with the league long after his own children stopped playing. Herb's devotion to the youth and arts earned him an official citation from Mayor Donald P. De Riggi in 1989. The citation recognizes Herb's passion for the arts and his unwavering commitment to the youth of Glen Cove.

Herb lived a very full and rich life. He pursued his passions and fulfilled his dream of acting and singing on Broadway. He will always be remembered for his witty humor, warm smile and gentle nature. He was often turned to for advice and considered a genuine source of wisdom. As longtime friend Damon Tillman put it, "Herbie didn't speak much but when he did speak we all listened."

Dorothy Reed Granger, longtime resident of Glen Cove and beloved matriarch of the well-known Granger family, died on July 4 at her home in Sag Harbor after waging a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer since December, 2002. She was 84 years old, and family and friends were with her when she passed.

The child of Dorothy Tyree Reed and Albert Reed, Dr. Granger was a 1946 graduate of the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, making her the first African-American to graduate from the school with a certificate in orthodontics. She was following in the footsteps of her father, the first African-American dentist on Long Island to have a full-time practice. Her attraction to the field of dentistry extended beyond the clinical to the romantic, and she married dental student Richard Granger in 1942. The two had been childhood friends who met up again in dental school. Her husband of 47 years died in 1989.

Dr. Granger was recognized for her participation in many professional and civic organizations, another asset she inherited from her parents; her mother was the first president of the Glen Cove chapter of the NAACP. Dr. Granger served as chair of the Glen Cove Library Board for 20 years and belonged to the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists and the New York Smart Set.

Dr. Granger is survived by her four children: Augustus, Tod, Beverly and Albert. Both Albert and Beverly are residents of Glen Cove; Albert, an endodontist, is a Glen Cove City Councilman and Beverly has a family dental practice. Ten grandchildren and many nephews and nieces also survive her.
