Walter Barlett Hicks Jr. of Lunenburg, VT, formerly of Sea Cliff, died on March 4, 2003. He was born in Westfield, MA, son of Edith (Angell) and Walter B. Hicks Sr. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on April 28, 1942 and fought in the Pacific Theater in WWII and was on the first wave landing on Iwo Jima. He was called back into the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He married Catherine Wechtel of Sea Cliff, where they settled. Walter worked for the LI Lighting Company and retired in the early 1980s. Upon his retirement Walter and Catherine moved to Lunenburg to be near their daughter, Virginia "Bonnie" VanDamm.

He joined the Engine & Hose Company Inc. of the Village of Sea Cliff Fire Dept. serving through the ranks to chief of the department. He was a life member of the department with over 50 years of membership. He was a charter member and life member of the Globe and Anchor Detachment US Marine Corps League, Sea Cliff before it moved to Glen Cove. He was instrumental in organizing the Iwo Jima Survivor Group for the New England states. Being civic-minded he joined the Lunenburg Fire Dept., the rescue squad and was the town constable.

He is survived by his wife Catherine; two brothers, William of Alabama and Philip of California; two sisters, Frances Wheeler of Bratleboro, VT, and Betty Hicks of Westfield, MA; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His daughter Bonnie predeceased him November 1989.

A memorial service was held on March 9 at Lunenburg Methodist Church, the Rev. Gerry Piper, Pastor. A committal with military honors was held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Lunenburg. Donations may be made in his memory to the Sea Cliff Fire Dept. Memorial Fund or to the Lunenburg Methodist Church, c/o Debora Thomas, Lunenburg, VT 05906. Arrangements were made by the Bailey Funeral Home, Landcaster, NH.

Marie B. Stobbe, 93, died on April 30, 2003 at North Arundel Hospital in Maryland. She was born in Brooklyn July 26, 1909. She enjoyed being a lifelong resident of Glen Cove. Marie was an accomplished artist and continued to paint until her very last days. She studied painting at numerous accredited schools and institutes and went on to own and operate "The Shadowbox" Gallery and framing store in Glen Cove.

Marie studied painting at Pratt Institute and the Grand Central School of Art with Ogden Pleissner, Wayman Adams and Howard Hildebrandt. In addition she studied in Madison, CT, under Robert Brackman and earlier with George Bruestle and Emile Gruppe.

Marie's accolades include being the first woman inducted into The Pastel Society of America and was also inducted into The International Society of the Artists. Marie drew sketches for The New York Herald Tribune and designed select book covers for Dodd Mead including one which was Star On Her Forehead by Helen Hayes. An exhibition of her portraits of the cast of Allegro was presented at Portraits Inc. and sponsored by the Theatre Guild.

Marie has had oil paintings and portraits on display at the Locust Valley Library, the National Arts Club, the Kennedy Gallery, the Christopher Gallery, the Lever House, NYC, the Gallery at Centerville, DE, and the Country Art Gallery. There are portraits painted by Marie that are on permanent display in the Eagle Lake Library, Texas. To date, the total number of collectors of her paintings exceed 50.

Her survivors include her daughter, Carol Gray; grandchildren, David Gray, Penny Jurick, Elysia Stobbe and Albert Stobbe. She also has four beautiful great-grandchildren, Alina and Jeremiah Jurick, Laina and Douglas Gray.

Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.

Josephine Sarro, 80, of Glen Cove, died on May 6, 2003. Wife of the late Joseph. Sister of Rosemary Izzo (Pat), Annabelle Ahlstrom (the late Donald), the late Larry Fiorini (the late Sally), Mary Piertrafesa and Jimmy Forgione (Eula). Also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass at St. Rocco's RC Church. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Brookville.

John T. Capobianco, 44, of Glen Cove, died suddenly on May 8, 2003. Son of Ricco and the late Charlotte. Brother of Matthew, Ricky, Susan, Cathie, Julia, Joan and Nicky. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. Godfather of the late Steven. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Boniface Martyr Church. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery.

William J. Maurer, of Glen Cove, died on May 9, 2003. Husband of Mary. Uncle of Lorraine Clancy (Robert). Brother of the late Fr. Maurice and Harry. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Martyr Church. Interment VA National Cemetery.

Charlotte A. Blackham, of Glen Cove, died on May 9, 2003. Wife of the late Lawrence. Mother of Carol Ciampi and the late Lawrence. Grandmother of Joseph and Anthony Ciampi. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Rocco's Church. Interment private.

Alfred A. Brown III, of Glen Cove, died on May 9, 2003. He was a 40-year life member Captain Emeritus Glenwood H&L E&H Co. Inc. Father of Robert (Donna), T.J. and Linda Cavallone (Nick). Grandfather of Jeffrey, Nicholas and Robert. Husband of Mary Ellen. Brother of Debby Kanter (Leonard). Brother-in-law of RoseAnn Brown. Also survived by his nieces and nephew, AnnMarie, Diana and Robert. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Firematic services were held at the funeral home. Contributions can be made to the Glenwood Fire Co., School House Rd., Glenwood Landing, NY 11579.
