On Monday, April 14 Glen Cove played its rival, Island Trees. A win would move Big Red into first place in the B/C II Conference. "The girls work extremely hard to do so well," says Coach Craig Johanson, who coaches along with Judi Geraghty. "I have expected so much from the girls this year and they are coming through game in and game out. They are outstanding athletes and deserve all the credit."

The next home game will be on Monday, April 28 at 4:30, on the varsity softball field, so come down and see for yourself how good these girls truly are.

On Thursday April 10 the weather was cold and bitter and so were the Glen Cove's High School baseball teams' bats. With the bleachers filled with diehard fans, GC lost its first league game of the season to Lynbrook 2-1. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Lynbrook but their ball field was too wet.

Even in losing, Glen Cove starter TJ Rodriquez still managed to dominate the box score as well as Lynbrook's bats. Rodriquez went all seven innings, allowing only three hits and walking one. He struck out 10 batters in the game and made only three bad pitches the entire game. Each one would end up costing Glen Cove dearly.

Lynbrook got on the board first with back-to-back doubles by Chris Frusci and Dan Parise in the bottom of the second. Rodriguez then promptly struck out the side, stranding a Lynbrook runner at second base.

Glen Cove missed a perfect scoring opportunity in the second inning. Chris Oglesby was hit by a pitch to load the bases for third basemen Bruce Testa. But Testa could not deliver as he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Neither team would score again until the sixth inning. In the top of that inning Frank Sabella got on first by way of Glen Cove shortstop Frank Carotta's fielding error. Sabella then promptly stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run for Lynbrook on a passed ball by GC catcher Garret Landry.

First basemen Tommy Monahan drove in Glen Cove's only run in the bottom of the sixth, with a two out RBI single. This drove in Bruce Testa and sliced Lynbrook's lead in half at 2-1.

Charlie Foster saved the game for Lynbrook but not without some controversy. With two outs in the seventh inning and GC centerfielder Mark Czerniawski on second base, left fielder Thomas O' Rourke grounded a ball towards third base. The baseball hit Czerniawski's foot as he headed for third. Czerniawski was immediately called out and the game was over. Lynbrook starter Rob Weisburg baffled Glen Cove hitters for 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run and four hits while striking out three.

"[Lynbrook] made all the plays when they had to," said manager Dolecki, "and we didn't."

The Glen Cove boys' varsity lacrosse team beat cross-town rival North Shore on Monday, 12-5. The Big Red came out of the blocks quickly, taking a 5-1 first quarter lead. Senior Captain Dom Bocchino led the offense scoring 2 goals and assisting on Jason Lindenbaum's and Jonathan Kobet's goals in the quarter. Mateo Ramos and Mike Kavanaugh hooked up for the Big Red's fifth goal. Mateo hit Mike with a 30-yard pass from the faceoff circle, surprising both benches!

The Big Red did not let up in the second quarter, again outscoring the Vikings 5-1. Scoring for GC were Dom (goal #3), Mike Kavanaugh (goal #2) Gianluca Carrabs and two from Jack Worth. Jaylindy recorded two assists in the period, Luca one, and Dom his third of the game.

Defensively the Big Red pressured NS all over the field. Goalie Danny Marks (15 saves) and defenders Ben Lowell, Drew Beisler, and Mike Morrison had an outstanding day. Also contributing defensively were Max Schneider, Frank Leotta, Jesse Gill, Dan Cox, and the man-down tandem of Jeff Moore and Daniel DelaCruz.

The Big Red was able to slow things down in the second half. Ben Lowell scooped a ground ball up, and hit Luca for a goal, to start the fourth quarter. Jack Worth closed the scoring with his third goal, on a Gianluca assist.
