  • News: At GC BOE Meeting, Teachers Come But Teachers Go

    Between 60 and 70 teachers came to the Glen Cove School Board meeting of Feb. 24 wearing black T-shirts with white letters that read, "Teaching without a contract takes the joy out of teaching." They stood at the entrance to the auditorium of the middle school and came in to take seats only after the board and administration had come in, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and Dr. Mary Ellen Freeley was introducing Gribbin School second grader Elias Blinkoff, a New York State finalist in the PTA Reflections contest.   • News: Waterfront Main Topic at GC Council Meeting

    There was a large gathering at the Glen Cove City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, but before the audience was brought into the meeting, Mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp and council members approved resolutions to prohibit parking on the north side of Sea Cliff Avenue from a point 300 feet west of Glen Keith Road to a point 200 feet west therefrom, due to problems with access in and out of driveways, a proposal already approved by the Glen Cove police. The council authorized the controller to accept a bid from Spring City for improvement of lighting in the downtown area, i.e., replacement of outdated lights with new, energy efficient, less light-polluting illumination. The city has received grant funding for this project, and the mayor thanked Assemblyman David Sidikman for his help. Finally, the council then approved a public hearing to be held on Thursday, March 25 to discuss the 2003-04 Community Block Grant Program. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Local Contenders Headed to Golden Gloves Semi-Finals

    All four local Glen Cove men are still among the hopefuls in the ongoing Golden Gloves elimination bouts. Two have already won at least one elimination bout, and the others are awaiting upcoming bouts. Ten bouts of the semi-finals will be held Friday, Feb. 28 at Glen Cove High School. FULL STORY

  • Sports: GC Girls Soccer Wins Big at County Awards Dinner

    Members of the Glen Cove girls' soccer team attended the Nassau County Soccer Awards Dinner at the Crest Hollow Country Club recently. At the dinner, junior goalkeeper Justine Golloub received All Class, sophomore sweeper Victoria Hackett received All Conference and senior forward Amanda Moretto received the Scholar Athlete award. Glen Cove Girls Soccer won the sportsmanship award for Conference 6 and received the Certificate of Academic Achievement from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for an overall grade point average of 92.
