Ten semi-final bouts of boxing are coming to the Glen Cove High School, as the 76th Annual Golden Gloves nears the end of elimination bouts held throughout the Metropolitan area. Four local Glen Cove men are among the hopefuls on the road to fisticuff fame. The annual Golden Glove Tournament, started in 1927, has launched many of boxing's stars on their way to fame and fortune.
The boxers are now fighting their way up through preliminaries held throughout the metropolitan area, so those appearing in Glen Cove will have won their spurs in these prelims. The Friday night card is expected to have a mix of weight classes, from the speedy light-weights to the hard-punching heavy-weights. However, in the Golden Gloves, expect the unexpected, where anything can happen - and usually does.
The Golden Gloves has been one of Glen Cove's most popular sporting events year after year. They are sponsored by the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club, which has run the local Glen Cove Boxing Club for several years. The club facility is used by young people throughout the local North Shore area who are interested in learning the skills of boxing, and improving physical fitness. It is staffed by local adult volunteers throughout the year.
Tickets are available at the Glen Cove City Hall - Recreation Department, Delicious Pizza (on Forest Avenue), Little Buster's Hide-a-Way on Glen Cove Avenue, Glen Cove Stationary, and at the door on Friday, Feb. 28 at Glen Cove High School. Proceeds go to the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club and help support its year-round activities.
