Harry C. Hyson passed away on July 13, 2002, after a long illness. He was 89. Mr. Hyson was born in Hampstead, MD, on Sept. 12, 1912 and graduated form the University of Maryland with degrees in entomology and agriculture.

From the mid 1950s until 1970 Mr. Hyson lived in Locust Valley where he was the president of Hyson Associates and Halco Chemical Company, specializing in horticultural consulting and related products and services, including Everlite Greenhouses. He was a member of the NY Horticultural Society, served as president of the Glen Cove Rotary Club and was master of the Glen Cove Masonic Lodge. He sold his business in 1970 and moved to Sun City, AZ. While there, he continued working through the 1980s as a consultant and as a regional representative for Everlite.

Mr. Hyson's daughter, Deborah, passed away last year. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary; a son, Kevin; daughter-in-law Lynn; and three grandchildren.

Jimmy Wheeler, 69, of Glen Cove, died on July 21, 2002. Husband of Annie. Father of Jimmy Jr., Tom, Larry, Bobby, Charles and Mildred. Brother of Johnny, Thomas and Ann Thomas. Grandfather of 15. Great-grandfather of three. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Burial Nassau Knolls Cemetery.

Esphyr Slobodkina Urquhart, a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, and renowned author/illustrator, died at her home in Glen Head at the age of 93 of natural causes on July 21, 2002. A memorial service will be held this fall. Esphyr was a member of the Great Neck and Glen Head communities for many years, a contributor to the University of LI, the Heckscher Museum of Art and supporter of the Great Neck Art Center.

Esphyr's paintings and sculptures are now part of the collections of a number of museums including the Metropolitan, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum, Hartford, CT, the Smithsonian, LI's own Heckscher Museum (where she has a permanent wing).

At the age of 90, Esphyr built a mini-museum at the Slobodkina Foundation of Glen Head, which houses paintings, sculptures, jewelry, dolls and artifacts. Over 100 pieces of Esphyr's artwork, dating from 1927, are on hand in the two galleries.

During the past 50 years Esphyr has written an 1100 page autobiography, as well as published over 20 children's books, the most well-known of which is the classic Caps for Sale. She also illustrated children's books by other well-known authors.

Esphyr Slobodkina Urquhart touched the lives of thousands of people through her dynamic, vibrant personality and a lifetime of work as an artist/author/illustrator. She will be greatly missed.

Willis (Bud) Wing, 82, of Brookville, died on July 22, 2002. He was retired from Sperry Gyroscope as division scientist after 43 years of employment. He had over 30 patents in his name for Sperry. His field was gyroscopes in inertial guidance systems. Husband of Betty. Stepfather of Wendy Drewes (Glenn). Papa of Glenn, Daniel and Harrison Drews. Brother of William of Pella, IA, and Evelyn Sproul of Cato, NY. Uncle of several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Catherine Lazarek, of Locust Valley, died on July 23, 2002. Wife of the late Harry. Mother of Nadya Standinger, Alicia Lazarek and the late John Lazarek. Grandmother of Danny, Krista, Gregory, Jason and Paul. Great-grandmother of six. Sister of Stephanie Kobyluch. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Josaphat's Monastery Retreat House, Glen Cove. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Leodegar Schussler, of Huntington, died on July 24, 2002. Husband of Emma. Father of Leodegar (Helen) Schussler, Inge (John) Ehner and Fenris (Mary) Schussler. Grandfather of Mark, Karen, John, Carolyn and Laura. Great-grandfather of Brandon and Caitlyn. Brother of Mafalda Lauber, Dolores Klein and Linde Uihlein. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral service at the funeral home. Interment private.

Muriel W. Szelle, 76, of Lattingtown, died on July 26, 2002. Wife of Dalton. Mother of Jerrilyn Holladay (Don) and Jacquelyn Fremin (Justin). Sister of Dora Kerr (Tom). Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass at St. Gertrude's RC Church. Interment in Kansas. Donations can be made to St. Gertrude's RC Church in her memory.

Angele Ibrahim, 91, of Glen Cove, died on July 27, 2002. Wife of the late Fouad. Mother of Medhat Sami, MD (Vivian), and Sherif Sami, MD (Anne-Marie). Grandmother of Eric, Tanya and Kevin. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Service held at St. Mark's Coptic Church, Woodbury. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.
