The North Shore Storm Boys Under 10 team won the Long Island Junior Soccer League Nassau Division 4 championship with a pair of convincing wins. On Saturday, May 31 the Storm played the Oceanside Fireballs at home and came away with a 5-1 victory. Midfielder Patrick Sakamoto, who played an outstanding game, opened the scoring in the sixth minute on assists from forward John Scuderi and midfielder Kevin Gaffney. The Storm scored again in the 16th minute when midfielder Michael Clausen scored on assists from midfielder Brian Brown and defender Wil Lieberman-Cribbin.
In the second half, the Fireballs cut the score to 2-1 in the ninth minute before the Storm came back in the 16th minute on a goal by forward Kyle Henry on passes from forward Ken Zukas and defender Charles Vasiento. Then Patrick Sakamoto made it 4-1 on his second goal in the 20th minute off passes from defenders Gavin Esernio and Ken Zukas. Ken would have had the goal, but Patrick got to the goal before it went in and gave it a sharp kick just to make sure it went in. But in the 22nd minute, Ken Zukas got a goal off passes from Kyle Henry and John Scuderi.
The win clinched at least a tie for the division championship.
Then on Sunday, June 2 the Storm traveled to Syosset to play the Syosset Lightning, the third place team in the division. The Storm knew it needed a win or a tie to clinch the Division 4 championship. The Storm left little doubt as to the outcome as it came out swarming all over the Lightening defense.
Patrick Sakamoto again opened the scoring in the fifth minute off a beautiful crossing pass from John Scuderi who received the ball from Brian Brown. Midfielder Brian Brown scored the second goal in the 18th minute off passes from Frank Scaturro and Michael Clausen to take a 2-0 lead. Then in the 24th minute the Storm struck suddenly just before halftime. Kevin Gaffney passed to John Scuderi in the right corner. John, who played an outstanding game, eluded several Lightning defenders and sent a sharp centering pass in front of the Lightning goal. Kyle Henry came streaking in to one-time a rocket past a startled Lightning defense into the upper left corner for a 3-0 lead.
The Storm came out on fire in the second half as John Scuderi scored in the second minute off passes from Ken Zukas and Wil Lieberman-Cribbin. The Storm put the game away in the seventh minute when Michael Clausen scored off passes from Frank Scaturro and Charles Vasiento.
The second half featured a penalty kick by the Syosset Lightning which Gavin Esernio made a diving save on to preserve the shutout. It was his fourth penalty kick save this season.
The Storm defense of Wil Lieberman-Cribbin, Frank Scaturro, Kevin Gaffney, Charles Vasiento and Gavin Esernio was outstanding in both games as it has been all season. The goal scorers usually get the attention, but if it wasn't for these boys, the team could not have been successful.
North Shore had a terrific season finishing with 8 wins, 1 tie and no losses. It recorded three shutouts and only gave up nine goals in nine games, never more than two in one game, while scoring 39 goals; the most in the division.
Because it captured the division crown, the Storm should be moving up to Division 3 next season.
