The boys varsity lacrosse team split their games last week, beating cross-town rival North Shore and losing to MacArthur.
In the North Shore game, things looked bad for the Big Red, as Viking face-off man Breck Archer putNorth Shore on the scoreboard just 10 seconds into the game. But the Big Red would battle back. Joe Kopito took a James Robbins pass and rifled home a goal to tie the game. After another North Shore goal, Jason Lindenbaum scored the first of his two goals of the day to tie the score at the end of the first period.
Dave McCalla gave the Big Red a short-lived lead in the second period, as the Vikings' Nakruhma Pierre tied the score with his second goal. Dom Bocchino then ran past the Viking defense and put the Big Red in the lead for good at 4-3. Lindy scored his second goal to close the half.
The third quarter saw Brian Fugazy score two goals for the Big Red, and James Robbins add a third, on a feed from goalie Dan Bellissimo (15 saves). North Shore would score two in the quarter, but the Big Red had an 8-5 advantage. Dan and the defense of Ben Lowell, Jeff Oglesby, Mike Puertas and Drew Beisler would tighten in the fourth quarter, allowing one goal, but withstanding the Viking onslaught for the Big Red victory.
The Big Red traveled to MacArthur, and quickly found the Generals to be everything they had heard. Leading 2-0 with four minutes to go in the first quarter, the Generals put it into overdrive, and scored five more before the Big Red could blink.
Knowing the cards were stacked against them, the Big Red got on the scoreboard with second quarter goals by Joe Kopito and Jason Lindenbaum. Never giving up, the Big Red scored seven more before the end of the game. Scorers for Glen Cove were: Joe Kopito - 3; Chris Corbin - 2; Jason Lindenbaum, Brian Fugazy and James Robbins - 1. Marcus Bianconi, Jason Lee and Dom Bocchino added assists, as well as Kopito, Fugazy, Lindy and Robbins. Dan Bellissimo had 15 saves in the game. The Big Red will face Elmont on Friday at the high school.
