Robert Bloom, formerly of Glen Cove and a retired government executive, died at the age of 79, on Feb. 21, 2002, at Autumn Care of Madison from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Mr. Bloom, a NY native, graduated from the University of Wisconsin and Harvard Law School. As a USAF officer, he served in Panama and Japan during WWII.

Arriving in Washington, DC, in the early 1960s, he worked as chief counsel with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, rising to the position of acting comptroller. He returned to private practice in 1976 as a partner in the law firm of Metzger, Shadyac & Schwartz. In 1986, he returned to the federal government as deputy general counsel to the Federal Thrift Investment Board, retiring in 1995.

Mr. Bloom will be remembered as an avid gardener and craftsman. His quick wit and unique ability to communicate "legalese" in layman's terms will be missed.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Margaret; daughters, Holly Bloom and Michelle Ponsart; and grandchildren, Beth and Chip Ponsart, all of Fairfax, VA.

Mr. Bloom will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Ethel L. Ashby, 77, of Glen Cove, died on Feb. 27, 2002. Wife of the late Stephen Sr. Mother of Stephen, Linda, Marcia, Glenn and Kevin. Grandmother of 25. Great-grandmother of 15. Service and interment under the direction of the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Burial Nassau Knolls Cemetery.

Alice M. Golden, of Middletown, RI, formerly of Glen Cove, died on Feb. 25, 2002. Sister of the late Grace Kelley. Aunt of Susan Newbold, Brendan Kelley, Kevin Kelley, Cathryn Smith, Vincent Kelley and Margaret Kelley and the late Eugene Kelley. Clarence O. Paris, of Lake Wales, FL, formerly of Glenwood, died on Feb. 26, 2002. Husband of the late Alice. Father of Yvonne Walas, Donna Green and the late James Paris.
