Our Coles School is for sale! Let's fight and say no! Our library should move to the Coles School, if we are still thinking wisely. Why? The super congested traffic around the library will be in the near future impossible to deal with. Two hundred and fifty luxury apartments will be built near the former OTB where many library users were parking because the parking for the library is almost nonexistent. Another 250 deluxe apartments will be built on School Street adding more users of the library. Even with the addition, there is not enough space, but the incredible traffic will not incite us to go to the library. The library should be regarded as a temple of knowledge, wisdom and enrichment of the mind and spirit, besides a community center.
Remember when decades ago a mayor lost the election because he built the garages behind School Street? There was bitter opposition, but today I don't know how we could cope without those garages with the present traffic.
The firehouse is nearby and our firemen have to run to save lives, increasing the danger and the congestion. Now, there is an opportunity for the library to move to Coles School.
There is ample parking space; there is space if more rooms should be built in the future. There is an auditorium which, when available, could be rented to approved organizations for cultural purposes generating some income for some repairs. Also it would give the opportunity to people nearby, especially underprivileged children to learn computers, etc.
Let's vote no to the sale of Coles School, otherwise very soon we will recite "Mea culpa." Due to the terrible traffic which will worsen with the 500 new units, accidents will happen easily. Let's act now; let's say "no" to the sale. Let's not say "yes" to the highest bidder - are we a democracy or a plutocracy?
