At the public hearing on Feb. 11 regarding the possible sale of Coles School, John McKay, director of the Glen Cove Library, initiated a proposal to possibly relocate the library to Coles School. At that same meeting, City Councilman Michael Norman presented the board of education an invitation from the city to sit down and talk about the possibility of the city being part of negotiations with the board's intent to sell the building. All involved parties seemed interested.
Last week, following up on the suggestions, members of the Glen Cove Board of Education and School Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellen Freeley met with Glen Cove Mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp and city attorney Dan Deegan, and John McKay, to discuss the ideas and possibilities. Following the meeting, Assistant to the Superintendent for Business Larry Blake took Mr. McKay on a tour of the school. Dr. Freeley said that the library is working up a proposal, due by March 1. According to Dr. Freeley, the board of ed will not be making any decisions regarding the Coles School building and property before then.
Also touring Coles School on Tuesday were representatives of the Eden II School for Autistic Children, Inc. in New York. The executive director of the school had written a letter to Dr. Freeley expressing an interest in seeing the building and property, as the school now rents space and is looking to purchase their own building.
