On the evening of Dec. 23, 2001, Olga Ghiliberti DeRiggi died at 94 years of age. Mrs. DeRiggi was known by many from Glen Cove because she participated in the events during the time that her son, Donald, was mayor. She played the piano both at senior occasions and at the first Labor Day Baby Celebration. Although she never read music, Mrs. DeRiggi had the ability to hear a popular melody once and be able to play it on the piano. In her 80s, she volunteered at the Lutheran school on the corner by her home, accompanying the three- and four-year-olds as they sang nursery songs.

Olga DeRiggi lived most of her life in Hempstead. About 25 years ago she wrote a family history that also reflected much of the change that she had witnessed during her lifetime. For instance, she recalled that as children she and her brothers and sisters knew it was time to return home from play when the lamplighter made his rounds illuminating the streets of the village.

Olga DeRiggi is survived by her children, Donald, judge and former mayor, Anthony, Dennis and Rosemary Alino; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her husband, Dominick, predeceased her.

Ethel E. Sandberg, a resident of Bayview Gardens Assisted Living Facility, Clearwater, FL, passed away Jan. 15, 2002. She was 96 years old. Ethel was born in NYC and later moved to Saranac Lake, NY, living with her mother and maiden aunt. Her mother had a boarding house for tuberculosis patients. It is there where she met her husband Carl V. Sandberg. They married and moved to Glen Cove, living in her mother-in-law's house which eventually became hers.

Ethel was secretary to the vice president of Columbia Ribbon & Carbon Company in Glen Cove. She and Carl purchased a mobile home in Clearwater on Tampa Bay when they retired. They loved to travel and after Carl died on 1978 she continued to spend winters in Clearwater. She traveled to Europe several times with friends. At 85 she and a friend did a bus tour of the California coastline.

When Ethel was approaching 90, she decided to move to an assisted living apartment in Bay View Gardens and stay in Florida all year. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Glen Cove and the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Clearwater. Among her hobbies, she loved to knit, do needlepoint and garden. She also loved to go to plays and concerts.
