  • News: Glen Cove BOE Hears Library's Ideas for Coles School

    On Feb 11, the Glen Cove Board of Education held a public hearing on the possible sale of Coles School. A second public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 25 at the middle school auditorium. The sale of Coles School needs voter approval and the public hearings are for the purpose of public feedback. At the Feb. 11 public hearing, the concept of using the Coles School property as a new home for the Glen Cove Public Library, initially proposed by John McKay, director of the library, garnered more and more support from each speaker stating opinion on the proposed sale. When Councilman Michael Norman spoke, he said," I have received several calls from members of the community who want to see Coles School maintain its presence in the community.   • News: Budget Talks Begin in North Shore School District

    Budget talks began in earnest Monday night at the North Shore Board of Education meeting at the high school. Superintendent Robert Root presented an overview of the budget discussions for the district. The tax rate for North Shore is sixth lowest of the 56 districts in Nassau County and allocates almost 70 percent of its budget to instruction, ranking it seventh in the county. The budget for 2002/2003 will concentrate on four main areas: maintaining educational programs; increased enrollment; long range plan for expansion and renovation; and the principal and interest payments on the $30 million construction bond.   • Sports: St. Gertrude's Blue Waves Win CYO Championship!

    On Sunday, Feb. 3, the eighth-grade girls' basketball team from St. Gertrude's of Bayville defeated the Long Beach tri-parish team (39-31) to clinch the Nassau-Suffolk Division "B" CYO Championship for the 2001-2002 season. The game, held at Molloy College, was the fourth game of the playoff series that began on Jan. 20 against Infant Jesus CYO of Port Jefferson. The second round game, held on Jan. 26, was played against Our Lady of Lourdes CYO of Malverne and the "quarter-final" match-up against St. Raymond's CYO of East Rockaway, was played on Feb. 2.
