I'm writing to speak the praises of the jewel in Glen Cove called the YMCA. I have lived in Glen Cove for approximately 25 years, but I was not born and raised here. I have no family, and I am a survivor of severe abuse and trauma from an extremely early age in my life. Consequently, I suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome and disassociative identity disorder. It has been a lonely and difficult existence.
However, three years ago I had the good fortune of finding my way to the Y where I have been able to finally feel that I am a member of a family-the YMCA family, meeting and getting to know people of all ages from all parts of the entire community. I have really been able to develop many true friendships. I also have the good fortune of being able to swim and exercise, which can only add to one's sense of well-being.
I could never have financially afforded membership to the Y, but they have a wonderful financial assistance program which they are very proud of and which is open to everyone.
So I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the wonderful people at the Glen Cove YMCA who are willing to accept people just as they are. I have for the first time a feeling of belonging to the family of humanity thanks to the YMCA.
