Michael Thomas Berthold

I called him Michael. Never Mikey. Not even Mike. To me he was always Michael. Graceful, passionate, honest. He called me sweetheart, sometimes honey. Even babe! He was the only man who could get away with it without a hint of chauvinism. With Michael there was never any guile. He said what he felt. His sweetness was real, his kindness, genuine. Michael died on Jan. 23, 2002 at the age of 51 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Michael grew up in Freeport and earned a BA and master's degree in architecture from the NY Institute of Technology. After graduating, he apprenticed with the firm of Knapp & Johnson and went on to pursue a lifelong dream of designing structures using renewable energy sources with Long Island architect Douglas Wilkie. In 1980, he designed one of Long Island's only solar powered houses which was featured in Solar Power Magazine.

Michael was passionate about conservation and the misuse of the earth's resources. He lived his convictions every day in what he did, what he used and what he ate. His commitment to conserving water and recycling was absolutely genuine, and when he designed his home office, he designed it to use solar power.

He also believed in giving something back to the community that he loved and was a chairperson of the Sea Cliff Planning Board as well as a trustee of the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff. In 1983 he began teaching energy conservation and architectural design at his alma mater NYIT while continuing his private practice in design.

But you couldn't really know Michael until you saw him play his beloved drums. A self-taught musician, he was never happier than when he had a great pair of sticks in his hands. He may have had the face of an angel, and the body of a runner, but he had the soul of an artist and music was the fuel that moved him. He organized a band when he was in his 40s, appropriately called Midlife Crisis and reveled in playing the Rolling Stones, Lovin' Spoonful, the Rascals and his beloved Beatles.

But Michael was most passionate about his family. He took great pride in his wife Laura and the considerable accomplishments of his two remarkable daughters, Kate and Emily. They will always carry within them Michael's integrity, creativity and compassion. He was a gentle soul in a world gone mad and the sweetness that was Michael will be missed forever.
