The Glen Cove wrestling team finished up 2001 and started off 2002 in solid fashion. On the 28th of December, with help of the Booster Club, staff, and students of Glen Cove High, the team hosted the 4th annual Glen Cove Holiday Tournament.

GC finished a solid 4th out of the 10 teams competing. Eighth graders Brian Monahan and Willie Lebron placed 5th and 4th respectively. Senior Pete Loiodice came back from a disappointing early loss to win three matches and place 5th. Jason Lee continued his tough wrestling helping out the team as well. Senior Kenny Engel placed 4th in this year s tournament as did sophomore Erick Martinez. Junior Brian Myers continued his tough wrestling placing 5th. Freshman Pete Charon won two matches taking 6th place honors.

Senior Jeff Oglesby lost a close match in the semi finals against the rugged Dan Oppedisano from Garden City. "Oggie" finished up the tournament in style though taking third place. Senior Captains Matt Hurwitz and Charles McCullough finished up the night in grand fashion. Both wrestlers recorded 1st period pins as they took the championships in their weight classes. This was Matt s second straight championship and the 4th for Charles this year.

The JV team has been very active as well. During the weekly Quadrangular tournaments as well as the Glen Cove tournament, the JV has been quite busy.

At 119 pounds, three wrestlers have made a solid impact. Andrew Burton, Greg Park and Jason Geller have all wrestled well and won matches for the JV. Freshmen Cedric Steed and Nick Montello have been busy men. Both have dominated the JV competition and filled in admirably on the varsity level. Sophomores Mike Kavanaugh and Max Schneider have improved greatly from last year as both keep racking up the pins. Freshman Jamisson Rossel has had a nice first year in wrestling winning a couple of early matches. What would Glen Cove wrestling be without good heavyweights? Well the long string of dominating big men looks to be safe in the hands of Freshmen Anthony Zavarro and Darrel Hopkins. Both of the big men have squashed the JV competition as well as place in varsity tournaments. With all of these competitors, the future looks good for the "Big Red."

On Saturday, January 12th, the Big Red Winter Track and Field Team went to the NYC Armory on 168th Street in Manhattan for one last time this season and competed at the Stanner Games. In the 55m dash freshman Lahaina Laroche ran a very impressive 7.89 FAT and placed 6th among all freshmen in the meet.

Her time is equal to a time of 7.6 and places her as one of the best in the county. Also running in the 55m dash was Rich Tarver (7.04 FAT), Travis Watson (7.08 FAT), Ricky Ferao (7.49 FAT), Casey Paganetti (8.1), Bobby Ying (8.19 FAT), Hung-I Lioa (7.75 FAT), Jiraj Hampton (7.63 FAT), Emily Keogler (7.89 FAT) and Giovanna Condello (8.37 FAT). Running in the 55m High Hurdles was Allen Shin (10.99 FAT) and Lucia Son (11.42 FAT).

The boys 4x200m relay had a superior time of 1:39.5 and moves up to 6th in Nassau County. Ricky Ferao (25) led off and handed off to Travis Watson (25), who handed off to Miguel Quinones (25) and then the anchor of Rich Tarver (24). In the other 4x200m relay team Tin Chin (25), Will Ng(27), Allen Shin (27), and Tony Condello (26) ran a time of 1:45.9. In the 1000m run was Italo Naves (3:04.9) and Manjit Singh (3:19.2). The 300m run saw a lot of first timers as well as personal records set. Amanda Moretto ran a personal best, 49.9, while Giovanna Condello ran 49.8 in her first 300m ever. For the boys team Tony Condello ran a strong 41.9 and Miguel Quinones ran 42.3. Five athletes ran it for the first time, Italo Naves (42.7), Luis Bautista (48.6), Manjit Singh (49.5), Bobby Ying (50.1) and Casey Paganetti (51.2). In the Field events Jasmine Thompson had a triple jump mark 1 foot farther than her best. Her jump of 29' 9" should put her in contention for all-county honors. Lucia Son had a jump of 23' 6", Travis Watson jumped 35' 9.5", Will Ng jumped 35' 10", Tin Chin jumped 35' 9", an Jiraj Hampton jumped 33' 3.25".
