The YMCA of Long Island, Inc. has relocated its corporate offices to stand on the beautiful grounds of the Glen Cove YMCA on Dosoris Lane. The ribbon cutting was held on Friday, Jan.11. Guest of honor State Senator Carl Marcellino attended the ceremony, and was warmly greeted and thanked by the Hon. Judge Richard McCord, chairman of the Board of Managers of the Y, for the great efforts he has made in support of the YMCA. It is largely due to five years of work and a $100,000 grant obtained by Sen. Marcellino that expansive and extensive improvements were made to the Glen Cove YMCA, attracting the corporate division to the city. Senator Marcellino, a former school teacher, is well known as a true friend to the YMCA. He commented that he is always ready to lend his time and energy to so great a cause.
Seven thousand additional square feet has been added to the facility, five thousand square feet in the new Weber Fitness Training Center alone. The former weight room now boasts stationary bicycles, treadmills, free weights, and Nautilus machines. There is a row of television sets, with headphones available, to keep one's interest while a bicycle keeps one's cardio-vascular system going strong.
Expansions have been made on the playground, adding a basketball court for summer camp. A great portion of the money raised is being used for scholarships to enable more children to attend both summer camp and after school activities. With additional space, more daycare and pre-school facilities can be added.
Marie D'Amato-Rizzi, chairman of the board of directors for the YMCA of L.I., Inc. thanked Glen Cove's new Mayor, Mary Ann Holzkamp, and said she is looking forward to a continued warm relationship with the city. She praised the beautiful grounds on which the Y sits, and commented that all should "Stay tuned for future plans."
