When I learned that the Friends of the Sea Cliff Village Library would be erecting a "Community Bulletin Board" on the Sea Cliff Village property known as the John Burns Green, I looked forward to its completion with great anticipation. Finally, there was to be a centrally located repository for information on meetings, events, and other happenings in the village. How convenient it would be to glance at the bulletin board to know what was happening in the community.
My jubilation, however, was very short-lived. The Friends of the Library refused the request of the Sea Cliff Arts Council to post our invitation to the community for our holiday celebration at Village Hall. Their response was that they were not posting any fliers of any village service organization. All Sea Cliff service organizations work selflessly to improve the quality of life of village residents. Many residents would participate in organizational events if given timely notice. To this end the community bulletin board would best meet the needs of village habitants.
In the December issue of the Sea Cliff Bulletin, the Friends of the Library boast that "the sign will be used to post upcoming village and library events." Their rejection of notices from community service organizations, not only does the community a tremendous disservice, but violates their mission "to post upcoming village and library events." If the Friends of the Library find that space is too limited to post fliers on the bulletin board, they could post a community calendar of all events of the month with the dates, times, and meeting places indicated.
If the Friends of the Library are not willing to have a true community bulletin board, perhaps the mayor and the board of trustees should pass a resolution to construct a community bulletin board on the John Burns Green that will serve the entire community, not just a select few.
