The Glen Cove High School wrestling team continued its success at the Mamaroneck Tournament. The team placed second out of 16 teams scoring 129 points. This was only three points short of the first-place team. The team placed eight wrestlers in the tournament.
The younger wrestlers did their part as sophomore Erick Martinez and eighth grader Willie Lebron each came back from an early round loss to place sixth in the tournament. Each wrestler had to win three matches to place after the early loss.
Senior captain Marcus Bianconi ran into a tough competitor from Clarkstown North in the semifinals but fought back to take third place honors.
Glen Cove led the pack with five wrestlers making the finals. Brian Monahan became the first eighth grader in Glen Cove history to make it to the finals of a varsity tournament. Brian was winning 17-15 in the third period of his semifinal match before he pinned his opponent from Harrison. Brian came up short in the finals but looks forward to four more trips back to Mamaroneck. The 89 lb. Monahan, who competes in the 96 lb. weight class shows that there are no classifications on heart and desire.
Senior captain Matt Hurwitz followed up a solid tournament at Huntington by making his second straight final. Matt dominated his way through the semifinals picking up pins along the way. Matt took second place in a weight class filled with tough competitors.
Senior Jeff Oglesby captured his first ever tournament championship in the 189 lb. weight class. Jeff also pinned all of his opponents leading to the finals and won the championship with a superior decision. Senior captain Peter Loiodice also captured his first tournament championship with a superior decision over his opponent from Beacon. Pete was the fourth seeded wrestler in the tournament at 119 lbs. He defeated the four opponents, two of whom were seeded ahead of him, in convincing fashion. Pete received votes for outstanding wrestler in the tournament.
Senior captain Charles McCullough continued his winning ways by collecting three first-period pins to capture his second straight tournament championship.
As a team Glen Cove showed great character closing a 20-point gap going into the final rounds down to a 3-point gap. Congratulations to all of the wrestlers.
