The Glen Cove High School Booster Club Fall Varsity Awards night was held on Dec. 5 in the high school auditorium. The big award of the night, the Superintendent's Cup given to outstanding senior student athlete, was a tough choice between nominees Michael Biscardi (cross country), Lucia Son (volleyball), Dan Bellissimo (boys' soccer), Diana Langenbach (girls' soccer), Danielle DiLeo (tennis) and Russell Keogler (football). The award went to Russell Keogler.

Next were the MVP awards and the Booster Club Award which is given to the senior who possesses the most school spirit and is conscientious and dedicated.

The cross country team MVP was Gino Dattolo and the Booster Club Award winner was Mike Biscardi. The cross country team went 8-5 for the season and is coached by Savy Gallo.

The volleyball team MVP was Kelsey Velazquez and the Booster Club Award went to Lucia Son. The Sportsmanship Award was given to Aubrie Dillon and Jean Erlandsen was the Most Improved. Kelsey Velazquez was also named All-Conference. The volleyball team went 8-9 for the season. The varsity coach is Kathy Vito.

The boys' soccer team MVP was Jose Oliva and the Booster Club winner was Herbert Lazo. Both Herbert Lazo and Jose Oliva were named All-County and Mike Grella, Frank Carrotta, Jason Lindenbaum, and Giuseppe Gallizzi were named All-League. The team went 12-2-4 and made the playoffs winning the first game and losing a close second game. The varsity coach is Lonnie Bresnick.

The Girls' Soccer team MVP was Stephanie Graziosi and the Booster Club award winner was Jessica Stocker. Stephanie Graziosi was named All-County, Joanna Moccia was named All-Class, while Lyndsey Testa and Meghan DeAngelis were named All-Conference. The team went 5-6-3 for the season. The varsity coach is Steve Teachout.

The girls' tennis team MVP was Melisande Schwartz and the Booster Club Winner was Jackie Aiello. The Tennis team went 3-7 for the season. The varsity coach is Adrienne Tonner.

The football team MVP was Travis Watson and the Booster Club award winner was Richard Tarver. The Kava Award went to Charles McCullough. The Kava Award is for the outstanding defensive football player. Marcus Bianconi and Charles McCullough were named All-County. For Charles it was the third straight year. Travis Watson was an All-County Honorable Mention. Jeff Oglesby was All-Conference and Matt Hurwitz was Academic All-Conference. The varsity team is Coached by Pete Kopecky, Steve Tripp and Vinnie Chopard.

The New York State Scholar Athlete Team awards were given to cross country, girls' tennis, girls' soccer and volleyball. The team must qualify for the award by having an over 90 percent GPA.

The Glen Cove Junior Soccer League awarded two seniors the Sportsmanship Award. The awards were presented by Dan Cavallo. They were Tony Condello and Dina Hackett.

The awards night is sponsored by the GCHS Booster Club. The officers and members of the Booster Club volunteer their time to support the student mathletes at the High School. This year the co-presidents are Linda Perlman and Arlene Arominski; vice president is Annmarie Morra; treasurer is Marion Voegtlen; recording secretary is Babara Moretto and the corresponding secretary is Carol Spahn. The awards night chairpersons were Lisa Belifore, Toni Kessel and Karen Cornell. Many members of the Booster Club also were present at the awards night. The next meeting will be Jan. 15 at 7:30 at the high school.

The Booster Club wishes to thank the school board, administration, coaches, staff, parents and the many others for their support of the Glen Cove High School Big Red student athletes.

On Friday, Dec. 7, the Big Red indoor track and field team started the season by beating last season's best times and marks.

"To start at this level is a great sign. We could wind up setting some new school records as we go through the season," said Coach Viggs. Senior Akia Dean's triple jump of 33 feet 6.5 inches was 3 inches farther than her jump last season when she went to the state championships. The boys' 4x400m relay team of Miguel Quinones (57), Tony Condello (58), Italo Naves (59) and Tin Chin (59) ran a best of 3:53.8, the best time in the past 4 years. The boys' 4x200m relay team of Ben Lowell (26), Jason Lindenbaum (26), Ricky Ferrao (25) and Miguel Quinones (26) ran a time of 1:43.4, also the best time in the past 3 years. Also having personal bests for the boys' team was Tin Chin with his triple jump of 36 feet (3 feet more), Jiraj Hampton's triple jump of 32' 11" (2 feet more) and long jump of 16' 7", Lucia Son's triple jump of 24' 9.75" (2 feet more than last season), and a new personal best for freshman Lahaina Laroche in the long jump of 12' 6".

The girls' varsity team of Giovana Condello (31), Becky Kelly (34), Stephanie Graziosi (30) and Amanda Moretto (29) was 3 seconds off of last season's best time with their 2:06.0 The girls' 4x200m relay team of Karina Alvarenga(36), Lahaina Laroche (34), Elizabeth Lottes (35) and Gabriela Anastasio (35) ran a time of 2:19.4. The girls' triple jump team of Akia Dean and Lucia Son took 5th place medals. Akia Dean also did them Invitational 55m dash and ran a time of 7.9 seconds. The girls' long jump relay team was Lahaina Laroche, Grace Liang and Lucia Son.

For the boys' team the varsity team of John Mahoney (34), William Ng(28), Bobby Ying (31), and Rob Lee (30) ran 2:02.9 while the team of Carlos Serrano (34), Chris Saviano (33), Joe Mazza (26), and Jake Rubin (30) ran a time of 2:03.0. The 4x800m relay team ran one less lap than required but did well. Mike Biscardi (2:24), Manjit Singh (2:29), Allen Shin (2:29) ran their 800m legs while a mixup at the handoff left 8th grade Casey Paganetti running a 600m in 2:00. The long jump relay team of Ethan Hatami (16'11"), Jiraj Hampton and Hung-I Liao came within 2 feet of a medal. The triple Jump team of Juraj Hampton, Tin Chin and Will Ng (33' 4") earned a 4th place medal.

The next meet is Dec. 14 at Farmingdale (7pm-11pm) and Saturday at the Armory from 9am-9pm.
