In response to the teacher who signed his/her recent letter to this newspaper "A Concerned Educator," I would like to let you and the other teachers at Finley Middle School know that you have the full support and respect of my family and many, many others. Your want of anonymity is your right. In light of the personal attack you have had to endure, it is also perfectly understandable. It was the letter written by the parent that was (in his own words, directed at you) "pompous, self-serving and presumptuous." (As soon as I finish looking "appellation" up in the dictionary, I'll let you know if that fits, too!) The entire fifth grade staff at Finley has always shown concern for my children's education and well-being. They have always received the very best from all of you. We stand by you.
It is my understanding that the original objection by the parent included his personal view that the Harry Potter movie promoted witchcraft and sorcery. When his insistence the trip be cancelled was not met with compliance, and the public letter writing campaign began, these reasons disappeared. Now it's only an education issue. While every parent has a right to his or her views and what is best for their child, no parent has the right to impose his or her religious or moral views on my children. And, make no mistake, this is exactly what was trying to be accomplished.
This whole experience is another example of someone making a mountain out of a molehill. Are we really in such a bad way that a trip to see a movie becomes such a controversy? What will be next? Cancellation of animal farm and zoo trips because one is a member of PETA? What happens when Circus Week comes around? The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous. There are more important matters like teacher shortages and standardized testing preparation that warrant our attention.
I am sure we all haven't heard the last of this and the many other pressing issues to follow. The agenda will grow and probably come to include the rally for the dismissal of programs and literature and projects that do not quite fit one's personal moral and religious standards. Parents and students, this is a public school system and it is time for you to stand up and object to all these ridiculous objections. Let your teachers know you support them and are here to help them.
