They said it could never happen in Glen Cove but, on Nov. 6, voters in Glen Cove elected the city's first female mayor by a margin of 1,353 votes. Local businesswoman and eight-year city councilwoman Democrat MaryAnn Holzkamp garnered 4,542 votes while her opponent, Republican David Zatlin, received 3,189 votes. The entire Team Glen Cove ticket was elected by a comfortable margin. The Team Glen Cove tally is as follows: Anzelmo Graziosi -4,544; Tony Jimenez-4,063; Joseph Gioino-4,015; Joan Meehan-4,547; Al Granger-4,601 and Mike Norman-4,395. For the Republican candidates, the tally is: Luis Vazquez-2,427; Steve Gonzalez-3,453; Barbara Vissichelli-2,695; Phil Zuccala-3,396; Ron Pascucci-2,897 and Frank O'Regan-2,738.
On election night a euphoric Mayor-elect Holzkamp said, "I am proud to break the barrier and be the first woman elected mayor of Glen Cove. I feel everybody realizes that gender is not a criterion for leadership. What makes a good leader is hard work, commitment, honesty and the willingness to serve. The opposition ran on a mantra of change, but the voters of Glen Cove have spoken---the change we so desperately needed already happened eight years ago when Team Glen Cove was first elected. We will continue on our path of accomplishments and Glen Cove voters made this possible. I thank the voters and we will not let you down."
On the morning after the vote, David Zatlin said, "I want to congratulate MaryAnn Holzkamp and the entire Democratic team. I wish them success in governing our city for the next two years. I'd also like to thank the voters of Glen Cove who supported me and my teammates and for giving so much of their time and energy to help in our campaign." Steve Gonzalez added, "I will stay active in Glen Cove politics. We ran a helluva race. We will keep a watchful eye on the next administration. David would have made a great mayor."
