Combing for Drugs Drives Parent Concerns
Several issues generated comments from the public during the Oct. 29 Glen Cove Board of Education meeting. One of the topics discussed at the meeting, which continued past 11 p.m., was the board's newly adopted policy regarding the testing of hair to determine illegal drug use by students taking driver's education. Driver's education is an elective course offered at the high school. It was not offered last year because it was targeted in budget cuts.

North Shore Speaks Out Against Board's Action
Over 250 people filled the gymnasium at the Glen Head School for the board of education meeting on Monday, Oct. 29. They were anxious to understand the reasons behind the recent vote by the board not to renew the contract of Superintendent Robert Root. Dr. Root, who is highly regarded by the New York State Council of Superintendents, has been employed in the North Shore School District for over 14 years and moved through the ranks until his promotion to the position of superintendent.

The Metropolitan PGA held their annual junior awards at next year's site of the US Open, The Black Course. Presenting awards on behalf of the PGA were guest speaker and PGA touring professional, Loren Roberts.

Glen Cove High School Big Red Sports
The Big Red completed the regular season by defeating Carle Place 4-0.Goals were scored by Mike Grella (2) and Jose Oliva (2). Herbert Lazo and Harold Arana had assists.This was another total team victory as both the offense and defense contributed to the win. Goalies Frank Carrotta and Andrew Morra, defenders Jason Lindenbaum, Mike Gonzalez, Scott Arnone, Isreal Cruz and Jake Rubin shut out Carle Place's offense.
