Harry Berkley Waller Sr., affectionately known as HORSE by his family was born on July 28, 1921 to Robert Dudley Waller and Ora Gresham in Middlesex County, Laneview, VA. Harry was raised in a very spiritual environment, which influenced him at an early age to accept Christ as his Savior. At the tender age of 13 Harry was forced to drop out of school after his father, Robert Dudley, passed away, to help his mother raise his two brothers who predeceased him, James T. Waller and Conrad Waller. Harry served in the armed forces and was a WWII veteran, honorably discharged. Some of the highlights in Harry's life was sharing a bunk with the actor Mickey Rooney and caddying for singer Perry Como. He married his childhood sweetheart, the late Lula B. Hill in 1941; out of that union came five children, Ora, Harry Jr., Robert Edward (Eddie), Dolores and Linda Waller Berry. Harry and Lula left Virginia, moved to Philadelphia and then to NY where they settled and raised their five children. Harry worked for Zara Construction Company for several years and worked many jobs before he began to work for Li Tungsten (Wah Chang). He worked there for 35 years and retired in 1985 as his health began to fail him. Harry was a learned musician, related to the late Thomas Fats Waller jazz musician, and could play the piano, guitar and harmonica. He would entertain his family and friends in his spare time. He was a great father, quiet gentleman, but very strong, and loved children, especially his own. He departed this life on Oct. 7, 2001. He leaves to mourn him, three daughters; two sons; one son-in-law, Solomon Berry; two grandsons, Noah Berry and Solomon Berry Jr.; one great-grandson, Charles Hackley Jr.; three granddaughters, Michelle Seaman, Mingynon Waller, Jasmine Thompson; one great-granddaughter, Marina Vasquez; one sister-in-law, Nabatha Waller; brother-in-law, James Hill; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, family and friends. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head.
