Two weeks ago, the Glen Cove Senior team lost a hard fought game to Hempstead by the score of 19-12. The first quarter saw Anthony Bellock return the opening kickoff to the Hempstead 35-yard line. Glen Cove then fumbled the ball on the Hempstead 25-yard line. The Glen Cove defense held the Hempstead offense in check and in the 2nd quarter, defensive tackle Ira Gooden recovered a Hempstead fumble and the Glen Cove offense took over. Half back Eric Moser ran around right end for a 28 yard touchdown run. The touchdown was made possible by a great block by halfback Anthony Bellock. Later in the same quarter halfback Eric Moser ran the halfback option pass to perfection when he hit tight end Jose Lebron for a 35 yard touchdown pass. Hempstead then scored late in the first half on a 10 yard run making the score 12-6. In the 3rd quarter Hempstead came out inspired and scored on a 50 yard touchdown run. They added on the extra point making the score 13-12. The defenses for both teams then took over and the score remained 13-12 late into the 4th quarter. Late in the 4th quarter defensive tackle Danny Rocco recovered a live ball when a Glen Cove punt hit one of the Hempstead players. That set Glen Cove up with one final chance. Glen Cove's offense wasn't able to get on track and Hempstead's offense sealed the game with a late touchdown run making the final score 19-12. On the defensive side of the ball defensive ends Deshawn Cofield and Justin Aviles turned in terrific games. Defensive linemen Jacori Bonner and Ira Gooden also stayed tough in the middle. On offense tight end Jose Lebron caught two passes (one T.D.) for 58 yards. Halfback Eric Moser had 55 yards on the ground and threw one T.D. on the offensive line center. Miles Landron stayed tough despite a sprained wrist. Glen Cove's next game is home on Sunday Sept. 30 against a very tough Massapequa Club.
On Sept. 23 the Cardinals faced a tough defensive club in the Seaford Bronco's. The Cardinals defense were just as tough. The Cardinals defense scored first as defensive tackle Own Valance tackled the Seaford running back in their own end zone for 2 points. Valance was helped out all day by teammates Anthony Leake, Blaise Dennis, Matthew Colella, Steve Gonzalez, Gavin Lyon, Michael Toldo, Devin LaFortezza, Brent Harrison, Joshua Amayce and Chris Theodorou. Offensively the line of Luis Amayce, Erik Dilon, Nicholas Manzione, Nick McAdams, Jason Esquilin and Shawn Blumhagen tied their best in opening holes for running backs Ryan Hopke, Johnny Bellock, Taheem Pasquez and Valance. Finally it was Vasquez who scored on the best play of the game to make the score 8-0. This week the Cardinals travel to Copiague for a 12 p.m. game.
On a balmy Sept. 23, the Glen Cove Cardinals Midget White team hosted the Seaford Broncos and were looking to notch their first win of the season. Glen Cove received the opening kickoff and started on their 40-yard line. Glen Cove moved down the field behind the inside running of Billy Lyon and the outside running of Evan Simmons. The drive was capped off by a 20 yard pass from Chris Borer to Brian Merrick for the first touchdown of the season from the Midget White. The extra point was not successful and Glen Cove led 6-0.
The Seaford offense started at their 40 and picked up the first down before turning the ball over to Glen Cove on downs.
Glen Cove took over on their 40 yard line and again marched down the field on a 7 play drive. The big plays were a 30 yard run off tackle by Evan Simmons, a wide receiver reverse by Michael Iannetta and a 30 yard gallop by Kyree Washington who was driven out at the 3. Billy Lyon powered in from the three to make the score 12-0.
Seaford took over on their 40 yard and promptly turned the ball over courtesy of a Billy Lyon Blitz. Kyree Washington scooped up the lose ball and raced 50 yards to give Glen Cove a 18-0 lead right before the half.
The second half was mainly a defensive battle as both offenses struggled to gain substantial yardage. Seaford went to the air and completed a number of passes, but could not generate big gains. Seaford scored late in the fourth quarter to make the final score 18-7.
The Glen Cove Midget White offensive line of Walter Hauenstein, Daniel Belfiore, Gardner Fitzgerald, Erik Swenson, Paul Gastello, Jerome Pinkney, Ryan Maier and Brian Merrick did an excellent job of opening holes for the running backs. Defensively, Matthew Satchell, Kevin Victoria, Chris Silva, Michael Doxey and Marvin Tate all made significant contributions. Finally, Stefan Schwartz did an excellent job of running the offense in the second half.
On a sultry autumn night at Glen Cove Pony White team defeated the Lindenhurst Gold team 20-0. Led by the passing of quarterback Michael McCrindle the ponies struck first. McCrindle's 30-yard pass to Matthew Rogers put the team on Lindenhurst's 20-yard line. Alex DiScala and Vincent Graziose's run set the table for Roberto Lyons who scampered in the seven-yard line for Glen Cove's first score.
Leading 6-0, it was time for the offensive and defensive line to set the Tempo for the night. Led by the aggressive tackling of Travis Stern the defense throttled Lindenhurst. With Bobby McLaughlin, Taliek Vasquez, David Rupp, Travis Stern, Kevin Basile, Jeffrey Fonseca, Craig Michie and Timothy Maher supplying the blocking, the team was able to maintain ball control throughout the second quarter. Nearing the end of the first half McCrindle's pass to Lyons resulted in the second score of a nifty 40-yard play. The point after came on another McCrindle pass to DiScala.
Down by a score 13-0, Lindenhurst did not relent and played solidly in the second half. The third quarter saw the opponents within reach of the goal line only. To be stopped by an all out defensive effort that resulted in a fumble recovery by Kevin Maccarone. In the fourth quarter, Lindenhurst continued their determined effort to score but were turned back by a solid team defensive effort. Midway through the period it was Lyons again, this time out distancing the defenders on a 40-yard run, the extra point coming on Alex DiScala's run. With time running down the defense did not relent with key plays made by Anthony Collins, Stuart Turman and Matt Cloninger. Christian Oglisby, Carlos Cancel, Abner Oliva and Armando Ortiz all gave solid efforts on special team plays and at nights end Coaches Joe Floccari, Mike McCrindle, Sal Basile and Reno DiScala as well as those in attendance were thankful for an entertaining evening.
(Before we get started with the game we would like to say that our Peanut family and we are sure the whole Glen Cove Football Program would like to send our condolences to those who lost loved ones on that tragic day of Sept. 11. A little piece of every American got damaged that day, but we shall overcome for the good of our country. God Bless America!)
And now on a brighter note, the game. And what a game it was. The 5's and 6's had their game faces on with a passing game and a ground game that could not be stopped. The boys scored on every possession that started with Tiquan Garner up the middle, then Tony Palmieri, around the outside. Ryan Perkins was next, to be followed by Billy Flahive, then right before the half, 5-year-old Josh Shuart took it to the house from 50 yards out. The second half started with a passing play to Tyrone Davis that went the distance followed by a scamper from James Catanzano and, last but not least, Joseph Anile ran on in after a tug of war with Peter Lizza who also had a couple of nice runs. Steven Giorda had a nice run, but ran out of gas and the game was over. In the middle of all that scoring that could not have happened if not for great blocking up front from Kristopher Moran, Christian Klimazewski, Matthew Peterson, Zehan Yoshi, Jatan Anand and Thomas Milne. Everyone had a fabulous game on defense. Every once in a while you need a fun game like this, and we hope they are all this much fun, that's what it's all about. Max McCrindle and Gregory Bonanza didn't feel up to playing but cheered their team every step of the way. Josh Figuera was sick and couldn't make it. Final score was 48-24. The boys go on the road for three weeks; see you at home next month.
On a cold, windy and rainy Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals took on a tough Copiague Silver team. Behind the blocking of Luis Amaya, Eric Dillon, Nicholas Mangione, Nicholas McAdams, Jason Esquilin, Chris Melillo and Shawn Blumhagen holes were open for running backs Taheem Vasquez, Ryan Hopke, Johnny Bellock and Owen Valance. It was Hopke following his blocking, scored the lone Cardinal touchdown on a 50-yard run around end to put his team up 6-0.
But it was the Cardinals' strong defense that didn't let Copiague score. The defense was led by Chris Thedorou, Michael Toldo, Austin Bresky, Anthony Leake, Gavin Lyon, Matthew Colella, Joshua Amaya, Devin Middleton, Steve Gonzalez, Brent Harrison and Pietro Lafortezza.
This week the Cardinals play Levittown Black at 9 a.m., Sunday in Levittown.
The Midget Red won their third game of the year, beating the Lindenhurst Gold by the score of 18-6. Trailing 6-0, Randall Lyons took the first handoff to the left behind the crushing blocks of Peter Cappiello, Anthony McCarthy, Anthony Hendriks and James Theodoreau, and burst 60 yards for the tying touchdown!
The Cardinals' defense took over from there, as Kristen Cornelis, Richie Maccarone, Nate Booth, Terry Jackson, Brian Brown, Jonathan Curan and Zach Boyajian stopped the outside game, forcing the Gold into the hands of Eric Tripp, Kenny Catanzano, Anthony Bucceri, Antonio Stanco and Pierro DiLorenzo who shut off the inside game!
Running backs Dougie Tripp and Jonathan Ruiz kept the Lindy defense honest, but Randall's hard running was just too much! Randall scored three touchdowns for the third week in a row!
With time running out, and Lindy trying desperately to get back in the game, Joey Durso had the "Elmers Glue Stick of the Day," sacking the Gold quarterback and dowsing any hopes of a Lindy comeback!
A rainy windswept turf did not hamper the Pony White team who emerged victorious by defeating Syosset 33-0. The defense scored first on a safety with Taliek Vazquez making the key tackle.
Alex DiScala then took the ensuing Syosset kick in for the score on a 50-yard return. With the defense leading the charge, Syosset was forced to surrender the ball again. With solid blocking by Bobby McLaughlin, Kevin Basile, Jeffrey Fonseca, David Rupp, Taliek Vazquez and Timothy Maher the team was again in position to score. Using the blocking abilities of Vinny Graziose and Roberto Lyons, quarterback Michael McCrindle was able to find Alex DiScala in the end zone on a 20-yard pass play. Solid defense again stopped the opponents with key plays by Travis Stern and Stuart Thurman. With excellent field position the offense was able to capitalize again leading to DiScala's third touchdown. Syosset was able to move the ball in the second half but this time it was Kevin Maccarone, Craig Mitchie and Anthony Collins providing the defensive support. The offense was guided by quarterback Matt Cloninger and the hard running of Matt Rogers. Glen Cove maintained possession for most of the second half. Rogers' 10-yard run led to the team's fourth touchdown with Travis Stern providing the extra point on a slashing run. Glen Cove's final tally came on a Rob McGrath run. A great ending on a soggy day.
The Glen Cove Senior Team (ages 13-14) lost their first home game of the year by the score of 14-0. Both defensives played tough during the game. In the second quarter Glen Cove picked up a Massapequa fumble and cornerback Anthony Bellock returned it 70 yards for a Glen Cove score. Unfortunately for Glen Cove the official blew the whistle and ruled that the ball was dead. The score ended up 0-0 at the half.
Late in the third quarter Massapequa broke the scoring drought when they scored on a 5-yard run up the middle on the Glen Cove defense. They added the extra point kick making the score 8-0. The Massapequa defense shut the Glen Cove offense down and again scored late in the fourth quarter making the final score 14-0.
Standouts on defense for Glen Cove were: defensive tackle Ira Gooden, one fumble recovery; cornerback Mike DiCarlo, one interception; and linebacker Miles Landron with one fumble recovery. Defensive end Deshawn Coefield played tough from his end position. On offense for Glen Cove running backs Brandon McFadden, Eric Moser, Michael DiCarlo and Anthony Bellock ran the ball tough but couldn't break free. Glen Cove is currently 1-2 and needs a big game next week against Copiague.
On a cold, windy, wet Sunday morning it was time to hit the road and meet Seaford. The boys and coaches met at midfield for the playing of the National Anthem, then they were inspired, and played like it, scoring four times and holding the opponent to only one score. The touchdowns were scored on this day by Tiquan Garner, James Catanzano, Tony Palmieri, all of whom scored for the third game in a row and Gregory Bonanza, who scored his first. Everyone played both sides of the ball and what a game, Cris Klimazewski, Kris Moran, Billy Flahive, Ryan Perkins, Atan Anand, Zehan Yoshi, Tom Milne, Joe Anile, Josh Figueroa, Peter Lizza and Josh Shwartz had. Both offensive and defensive lines played outstanding as usual. Next week it's on the road at 9 a.m. in Syosset.
