After sailing 190 miles around Long Island, participants in the 25th Annual Around Long Island Regatta crossed the finish line and celebrated at an awards dinner. Overall prizes and division trophies were awarded at presentation ceremonies for all competitors at Sea Cliff Yacht Club. The regatta was sponsored by Cablevision Systems Corporation.
Many competitors from last year returned along with some newcomers, all of them vying for the coveted Cablevision Trophy. Spank Me BT, owned by last year's winner Bob Limoggio, was the pre-regatta favorite as the largest monohull. In this year's race, the defending champions were up against a fleet of seasoned competitors in Brown Eyed Girl, Avalon, Different Drummer, Cwene II, and Ladyhawk.
Weather conditions challenged many of the 126 teams. While some were forced to drop out of the race, most finished within 36 hours.
Trophies were awarded for first through third place in non-spinnaker, monohull, and multihull divisions. Additionally, the first-to-finish trophy for the monohull class went to Spank Me BT, with Bob Limoggio, and crew at the helm. The multihull first-place finish trophy went to the crew of Avalon, led by Mark Murray. Different Dummer led by Ted Naughton's squad, won top prize, the Cablevision Trophy, which was presented to the overall winner in the PHRF (Spinnaker) Fleet. Other notable finishers included non-spinnaker PHRF fleet winner Cassiopeia, run by Laura Sudarsky and her team. The overall team trophy was awarded to Thrown Together, a team comprised of crew members from Peregrina, Spank Me BT and Eclipse.
