Glen Cove Mayor Thomas Suozzi has announced that the annual Snapper Derby in Glen Cove will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15. This is a rain or shine event and starts with registration at 8:30 a.m. Registration closes at 9:30 a.m. Fishing continues until 11:30 a.m. with awards and prizes to follow. The only requirements are that participants are between the ages of 6 and 16 and that they bring their own rod and reel. There are junior and senior age divisions and first, second and third prizes will be awarded in each division. Each year an award is given to the best angler.

All entrants receive a T-shirt, hot dog, soda and a coupon to win one of 75 prizes donated by sponsors. The drawing will be conducted after the derby.

"This is one of my favorite events. Each year dozens of children enjoy fishing off the pier of our Pryibil Beach. The Glen Cove Anglers Club and the Matinecock Rod and Gun Club do a wonderful job of hosting this event," said Mayor Suozzi.

Sponsoring this year's Snapper Derby are: Glen Cove Angler's Club, Glen Cove Dept. of Recreation, Matinecock Rod and Gun Club, Glen Cove Democratic Club, Glen Cove Republican Club, Duffy's Bait and Tackle, Elite Coach Works, Pardo Roofing, Andrea Electronics, Flipse Autobody, Glen Cove Sports Shop, Buongustaio Gourmet Market, All Capp Auto Glass, Valley Sport and Trophy, North Shore Golf Cart, Inc., Konica Imaging Inc., Richard Klenkel, CPA, Omega Marble and Tile, Nick DiLeo Insurance, Clinton Welding and Lazer Blue.
