Congratulations to Howard and Heidi Robertson and the board of trustees for their successful efforts in launching the Glen Cove Education Foundation. Their first fund raiser, a golf outing and cocktail reception, held on Monday, July 30, was well attended and well supported.

Education foundations are found in other communities on Long Island and around the country. They are separate entities from the school district, with their own governing board. They give the community an opportunity to fund special projects benefiting and engaging our students. A local example of a community-supported project is the annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. Community funding in a number of Long Island school districts helped provide additional resources and promotion for their school teams. Partnerships with our schools benefit our children and our community. They can enhance the educational experience of our children. Kudos to the Glen Cove Education Foundation, may they have a long and bright future in our community.

Janet Bates-Wilkins

(Ed. Note: Mrs. Bates-Wilkins is a member of the Glen Cove Board of Education.)
