Port Washington resident John Cullinane brought home a silver medal at the regionals of the Junior Olympics in Lake Placid on Memorial Day weekend. He won the medal as a heavyweight in the boxing events. Cullinane, a student at Chaminade High School, trains at the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club under the tutelage of Frank Pena and Tito Soto.

The road to Lake Placid began with Cullinane capturing the metro heavyweight championship covering the five boroughs and Long Island, defeating tough competition along the way and winning the finals at the famed Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn in early May against a tough Matthew Turner.

He now plans to take the summer off from boxing so he can get ready for football season at Chaminade where he plays tailback for the varsity. After football season, Cullinane will return to the boxing ring to prepare for the Golden Gloves and hopefully continue his amateur career in a successful way. He certainly is off to a good start.
