The presentation of the Superintendent's Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highlights of the Glen Cove High School Varsity Awards Night. This award is granted each season to the outstanding scholar-athlete in each seasonal sport who the coach believes personifies excellence in scholarship and, by virtue of performance, has been a major contributor to the achievements of the team. The superintendent of Glen Cove Schools, Dr. Mary Ellen Freeley, then personally interviews each of these fine young people and makes the extremely difficult decision as to who will receive the Superintendent's Scholar-Athlete Trophy. That each one of these athletes was nominated for this award is an honor in itself, and for that each one receives a medal of recognition.
This season the Superintendent's Scholar-Athlete Trophy was presented to Jeff Rudloff.
This season's nominees, who all rank in the top part of their class and have participated in innumerable extra-curricular activities are as follows:
Scott Young - Boys Tennis
Kate Moore - Girls Track & Field
Jeff Rudloff (Winner) - Boys Track & Field
Eric Bolyard - Golf

The Big Red Boy's Track and Field Team put forth a great effort this past season with 26 athletes competing at the highest levels. With a break down of 3 Seniors, 9 Juniors, 6 Sophomores and 7 Freshmen and an 8th grader, the team shows much promise for the 2002 season. The experience gained this year at several high caliber meets will help to build a track powerhouse next year. The quad/tri meet record was 6-7 for the third straight year, but with the team scoring 70 more points than last season.
This year's team competed in many different events with athletes often competing in 3 events. Junior Rich Tarver tied a school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.7 and finished the year ranked #1 in Nassau County. Senior Jeff Rudloff finished a very long year of football, wrestling and track and with being ranked in the top 6 in the county in the 110m High Hurdles. The 4x400m relay team ran a sub 4 race and was in the top 15 of the county. The 4x800 relay team bested last season's best marks by running a 9:46. In 17 events this season, the team had better times/marks than last season in 13 of them. There remains a great hope for next season and the continued improvement of the athletes that represent the City of Glen Cove.
Coach Vignolini said, "I am very proud of the work put forth by this team and the determination that they showed in trying to get better, faster and stronger. We worked hard and it showed. Little do they know how much more work they will be asked to do next year, but I know that they will rise to meet the occasion. As my old high school coach used to quote from Admiral Halsey "There are no great men. There are only individuals, who through circumstances, are forced to meet an occasion." This team is made up of those individuals who rose to the challenge. Please congratulate the following athletes when you see them. . .
The athletes this year with their specialty events are:
Seniors: Jeff Rudloff (110m, 4x100m, Discus), John Peralta (Shot Put, Discus), and Dave Paskoff (Discus, Shot Put, 4x100m) - Good Bye - You will be missed very much.
Juniors: Luis Bautista (Discus), Mike Biscardi (800m, 1600m, 3200m), Antonio Condello (400, 4x400m, John Mahoney (Shot, Discus), Italo Naves (800m, 1600m, 3200m), Will Ng (Discus, 100HH, Triple Jump), Joe Shin (100m, 200m, Triple Jump), Rich Tarver (100m, 200m, 4x100m), and Travis Watson (High Jump, Triple Jump, 4x100m)
Sophomores: Tin Chin (110HH, 400IH, 400m), Anthony Hui (400m), Raja Madaan (800m), Sean Pearlstein (400m, 800m), Miguel Quinones (400m, 200m) and Manjit Singh (800m, 1600m).
Freshmen: Frank Graziosi (400IH, 400m), Jiraj Hampton (Triple Jump, Long Jump, 100m), Philip Kong (400m, 400IH), Jesse Liang (Shot, Discus), Hung-I Liao (100m), Johan Ortega (Shot, Discus, Allen Shin (800m, 1600m, 3200m).
8th Grade: Joe Mazza (400m, 800m, 1600m)
I would like to thank and acknowledge my assistant coach, Savy Gallo, for all of his hard work and dedication to getting the team healthy and competitive. I would also like to thank the parents, administration, Mrs. Liang (for supplying food), the Booster Club, Mrs. Berhang and Mrs. Pearlman for all of their support over this long season and year."
After a long season, three athletes went to the County Championships on May 22 and 23. While the team could have taken over 15 athletes, only three attended due to injuries and illness. But leading the charge as a legitimate contender for a county championship was Riche Tarver in the 100-meter dash. His time of 10.7 ranks him as the best athlete in Nassau County in the 100m dash and in the top 20 of the state. Rich as been bothered by a hamstring injury since the end of April. Despite his pain he ran an 11.50 FAT or 11.3 hand time and made the finals. But in the finals, his 11.4 was only able to get a 5th place finish and miss being named All-County by 0.2 seconds. His best time last season was 11.4. He will compete at the State Qualifiers with a chance to go to the state meet in June. Also running was Senior Jeff Rudloff who ran the 110m High Hurdles. His time of 16.78 FAT or 16.5 was his fastest ever at Mitchel Park and qualified him to go to the finals on June 23. Unfortunately, due to a lower back pain, he did not run in the finals. Running in the 100m dash was Travis Watson whose time of 12.30 FAT (12.0) was off of his best of 11.8 earlier this year. Travis was one place away from qualifying for the triple jump and high jump.
State Qualifier - Section 8 @ USMMA, King Point
On May 29, Rich Tarver tried to run his best at the State Qualifier meet at the USMMA at Kings Point and qualify for the 100m run at the state meet held this June 8th and 9th at Mitchel Park. But with the very sore hamstring and quad muscle, his time of 11.3 was still off of his county best time of 10.7. Rich made the finals on May 30th, but was unable to compete. When Rich returns next year, he will be the leading contender in the county for the state meet. His times this season were all better than his best time last season (11.4), while he tries to break the school record in the 100m dash. Currently he is tied for 1st with a 10.7 in the 100m dash with Sammie Real. The time of 9.6 in the 100-yard dash by Mark Rushmore in 1976 can be converted to 10.5, but it should be noted that the 100-yard dash is about 9 yards short for a 100 meters. Regardless, Rich's time is one of the top three ever at Glen Cove High School with records going back over 30 years. Just wait till next year!
