George H. Downing, of Glen Head, died on June 5, 2001. He served as First Lieutenant, US Army, during WWII. He was a partner with Titus, Bowne & Downing, was superintendent of Building, Grounds and Transportation at the North Shore schools and was a past member for over 50 years of the Glen Cove Masonic Lodge. Husband of the late Doris. Father of Claudia (Dee) Downing Schaffield (Michael) and Deborah Downing Gardner (Ralph). Brother of Helen Downing Simester. Grandfather of Lucy Downing Gardner and Grace Downing Gardner. The Downing family has been on LI since 1675. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head.
